We have about 250 servers in our parish ( of about 1000 families)

Every boy, from age 5 to age 18-19 is personally invited to be an altar server by our pastor. Needless to say, most join.

We have about 60 at our main Sunday Masses, only about 10 or so for the Saturday Vigil.

We have a long procession with the altar boys (they are all boys), carrying swing torches. Then different boys would perform different tasks. Some will hold candels by the pulpit when the Deacon reads the Gospel, others will assist Father in recieving the offetory, others will ring the bells at the correct times, still others will hold patens at Communion time.

The older, senior altar boys will act as EmmCee’s, placing and removing the pall over the chalice at the correct times, and turing the pages of the Sacramentary for Father at the correct times. ( and watching over the younger kids, making sure they are in the correct places doing the correct things.
60 servers at one Mass? That seems a little over the top don’t you think?. I mean there really isn’t enough to keep 60 occupied is there? Or do they all just sit around for most of the Mass?

While I agree serving is a great thing and something I did for years 60 in one Mass? Doesn’t sound right at all.

Is it 60 at the main Sunday Mass or 60 divided over all the Sunday Masses? (you use main and Masses together)

60 at the main Sunday Masses ( 9:30am and 12:00noon)

There will probably be 10 or so at the 4:00pm Saturday Mass, and maybe 4-5 at our Sunday 8:30pm Mass ( in Detroit each Vicariate is to have a Sunday pm Mass, our parish has it for our Vicariate) There is also a 6:00am Mass on Sundays (each day of the week actually), I’m not too sure how many altarboys serve that one.

In addition, we will be starting a 6:30pm Extraordinary Form Mass when our parish renovations are complete in Feb. That will have 4 scheduled altar boys. That is due to the specific type of training needed for the TLM.

That would be our parish’s first endevor into having scheduled altar boys. Currently, all altarboys who are present serve, and they do so at whatever Mass they happen to attend.

Any non scheduled altarboys who happen to attend are welcome to vest and carry swing torches in procession, and possibly hold the patens at Communion time, however.

1-2 (out of which I’m one)…but we are a very small church. In fact it’s not a church but a chapel only.

I get it, You have every boy doing some function at the Sunday Mass or at whatever Mass they show up at… Sounds kind of like AYSO Soccer where all the kids play every game. Where do they all sit when not working? I would hope they go into the sacristy or something, otherwise you’d have a giant mess at the Altar and Sanctuary.

It really sounds to me like you guys have lost control of the program and let it morph into something that it wasn’t intended to be. I applaud the general idea but it seems a little extreme in practice.

Sure, there is.

Some carry the swing torches in procession. Others hold patens at Communuion. Still others assist the priest in recieving the gifts.

Sure, there is lots of time that the servers spend not doing server things, but that’s true for every server in any Mass.

We usually have 4-5 on Sunday mass and 2 at daily mass in the morning and 1-2 at daily mass in the evening. We have lots of servers, including both boys and girls. My son loves to serve and does a great job. He also wants to be a priest. However, because we have so many servers on the schedule for Sunday mass, he does not get to serve very often. That is my biggest complaint against girls servers. If there were no girl servers, boys would get more opportunities to serve and more graces to become a priest.

Why don’t you talk to the person who does the schedule and explain your son’s situation? Considering a religious vocation should be encouraged and hopefully he will be scheduled more often. Perhaps his name can be the first called when a substitute is needed.
It is a wonderful thing for you son to consider a religious vocation and in fact to serve, but keep in mind some of the other boys might not share in his enthusiasm for serving and not really want to be scheduled more than they are. Eliminating the girls might cause a problem for those boys who are not interested in picking up extra Masses.

Well, with 60 servers, it would seem that there is a whole lot of time when they’re nor doing anything. In fact, it would seem to me that their participation would be at best minimal in any sense of the word, except to carry torches, and that would be a lot of torches. I mean even if you guys have 15 extraordinary Ministers two Priests and three deacons that only requires twenty patens. Where is everybody else? Thats forty servers standing around.
Sorry it still seems kind of surreal to me and I served for years.

I can’t argue the method when the results are so outstanding; as noted in many ealier posts this parish has a large number of vocations. I do wonder though how it is decided who does what. Around here I imagine the more assertive servers would get to do most things.
We’ve had all of the servers, or most of the servers suit up for Masses at different times, especially the new server induction. There still has to be kids assigned for the tasks while most of the servers sit in the pews or in the server room.
I can not imagine Christmas Mass when there is incense used or when the Cardinal or Aux. Bishop come. There are very specific jobs at those times as well.

Thats what I would think, lots of down time. I’m glad the program produces vocations:thumbsup: so it must be working, although it does seem rather strange.

I remember Midnight Mass years ago and we might have had the bulk of the society out there, maybe twenty or so, but the majority were only there for the entrance and exit processions. The rest of the time they retired into the Sacristy or into the pews.

The Senior altar boys assign the tasks to the younger ones.

They try to pair up a younger boy who hasn’t done a particular task with a slightly older boy who has done it several times.

For example, last Sunday, my 9 year old son was paired up with a 7 year old to recieve the Offetory. So my son, by example, showed the younger boy when to get up, when to turn to genuflect, etc… The older boys train the younger ones, and, in turn, get trained by boys slightly older than them.

One other thing that is simply incredible is how the postitive peer pressure teaches the young boys how to behave in Mass. Boys really do like to fit in, especially with older boys. And when a squirrely 7 year (like my son used to be) sits each Mass with 12,15,19 year olds who all sit quitely, and even all stand and gueflect in unison. The younger boys follow along, trying to be ‘part of the group’. And after a year or so of service, my son would not even thing of doing anything but sitting quietly, or doing anything with his hand but keep them plams together, flat in a prayerful position.

And he learned that entirely by sitting with, and following the example of, all the other boys.

And yes, the results have been excellent. Out of a parish of 900 families, we have 6 men in the seminary right now, ( and 4 others ordained to the priesthood within the last 10 years). We have 3 men in the Diaconate program and 4 women in novice\postulant programs to religious life.

It really sounds to me like you guys have lost control of the program and let it morph into something that it wasn’t intended to be. I applaud the general idea but it seems a little extreme in practice.
No control is lost at all. In fact, it so well under control, it’s fantastic

(see my post above)
Thats what I would think, lots of down time.
Every Mass has lots of ‘down time’ for every server, no matter where you are or what program.

It also depends on what you define as ‘down time’? In our parish, the altar boys are doing something critical at every moment. They are setting examples of correct behavior at Mass for their younger brothers in Christ.

They are showing the younger boys that yes, MEN DO PRAY, and that it’s part of what it means to be a true MAN. And that parts of the Mass are so Holy that we pay close attentention.

Because of that, I’ll happily put our 7 year olds up against most parishes teenaged servers for reverence and ability, and our 17 year olds could act as EmmCees for Bishops on any Solemnity.

I am an altar server.

We are SUPPOSED to have 3 servers at each Mass, but this has really become a problem lately, what with people not showing up, and all… We have 27 total active servers (there is also an alternate, but he hardly ever serves).

I hope our parish can fix our server shortage soon, as 27 is not even close to enough for us! (I go to a really big church, and the servers do a lot more than others at other parishes, since we have to move around a lot.) 🙂

Hi we have 7 on saturday 2 of which are girls, and 4 on a sunday sometimes more, 1 of which is a girl.
It will probably be more soon as two of our churches are merging into one parish at our church as falling numbers has forced the other church to close and be knocked down so in a couple of months people from our neighbouring parish will be joining us and this includes altar servers.
