Altar serving in a state of mortal sin

I’m pretty scrupulous. It’s been about 4-5 months since I last received Communion 😦 and probably 3 months since I last altar served. I was wondering if, since I believe that I’m in a state of mortal sin, I could receive Communion. I am currently getting help for my scrupulousity.

Find a spiritual director and ask him.

When you go to confession, do you go to the same priest every time - someone who knows you and your scrupulosity well? That’s what you should be doing. Most worries about invalid confessions from scrupulous people turn out to be unfounded. A regular confessor could help you sort that out and would also have the authority to tell you what to do in such a way that you would not sin or otherwise offend God, even though you were doing something that felt scary or wrong.

If the help you are getting for your scrupulosity does not include a priest, fix that right away.

I had this same type of problem when I was young. ,Betsy’s advice is excellent. It worked for me. 👍

if you are battling scrupulosity you are not the best judge of whether or not you are in a state of mortal sin. go to the priest you normally rely on for confession. Just refraining from reception of holy communion is not a sin of any kind unless you also deliberately missed Mass without a compelling reason. In any case even if you were in a state of sin you could still serve, since even the priest can say Mass and validly confect the sacraments in that state. Very little spiritual good, and some possible harm, can come of asking such questions of third parties who cannot possibly know anything about the condition of your soul. Find one good priest who understands your struggle, confess only to him and follow his advice.

unless you know for a fact the priest–not you–did not follow the form for confession, your previous confessions were valid. Unless you deliberately, with full knowledge and intent, withheld a mortal sin, yes your previous confessions were made in the proper disposition.
 
So can I altar serve? Scrupulousity looks like its here to stay for a while, and I want to altar serve again. I am getting help for it at the moment.

I know that priests can validly perform Mass in the state of Mortal Sin, but that it would be a mortal sin to do so. Am I correct in saying that, and would it apply to altar serving.
 
I’m lined up to serve tomorrow. Can someone please give me a clear answer as to whether it’s a sin to altar serve in the state of mortal sin?

I’ll leave the seeing a priest up to me, I’d just like an answer.

No it is not a sin.
 
Just don’t receive Communion if you’re sure you’re in a state of mortal sin.

Are you sure about this? It seems that because it would be a mortal sin for a priest to participate in the Mass in mortal sin, it would be the same for altar servers.

I’m not really absolutely sure I’m in mortal sin, but I think it’s likely.

A priest must absolutely partake in the Eucharist during Mass. An altar server doesn’t. That is why a priest must be free from mortal sin during Mass. No Eucharist for the celebrant, no valid Mass.
 
Do not receive communion. Just serve. It isn’t a sin to serve, it is a sin to receive communion in a state of mortal sin.
