The priest decides the attire for altar servers. Cassock and surplice are very legitimate but they are expensive thus not everybody adopts them.

Typically there are vestments for the Altar Servers in the space where they vest.

Use the ones provided by the Church, since the whole point of the vestment is to conform yourself to the rest of the Altar Servers, and not draw any attention to yourself by wearing something different.

We had a seminarian with us two summers ago. He wore a cassock any time he came to church and for Mass he donned a surplice - the rest of the servers wore albs. The older people called him “Father” and he had to correct them.

He’s now an Instituted Acolyte and the new Bishop told him to lose the cassock.

The GIRM states ‘Acolytes, lectors, and other lay ministers may wear the alb or other suitable vesture that is lawfully approved by the Conference of Bishops’ (339.) So in my opinion it should be alright but check with the Priest first.

At my parish, the altar servers wear cassocks and surplices during Ordinary Time and albs for Lent, some of Advent, and Holy Days.

Just ask the priest or head server. We were cassocks and the white surplace.

usually the team will wear the same clothing as each other so it be wise to ask before hand and find one that fits you It might make you stand out and look like you are doing a different role to the servers if your set is different

Most churches I go to most likely supply some type of white robe thing and rope around the waist for the altar servers at OF Masses. I have no idea about those who serve in the EF Masses if the church supplies what they need or not for their servers’ garments as they are different in style compared to OF Masses.
