You could celebrate the Tridentine Form on the hood of an army truck in the middle of a battle field, and you could celebrated the Ordinary Form on the highest of high alters in the grandest of grand basilicas.
The glory that is the our Lord in the Eucharist outshines the location!
Contemporary (post-conciliar) fashion considered, it would be a rarity, but (as others have already said), yes, of course it can be done. Curiosity gets the better of me here, though, and I have to ask why anyone would think such an altar could not be used? Can an OF Mass be said on altars like this one with communion rails?

Not just fashion, but cost. Such an altar would have cost a couple hundred thousands 50 years ago… today the same pieces would cost more than a million. Heck, a good monstrance can cost $40K these days… and that’s not even discussing the fact that they’re only gold plated!Contemporary (post-conciliar) fashion considered, it would be a rarity, but (as others have already said), yes, of course it can be done. Perhaps it wasn’t clear, but the reference in my earlier post was not to the specific altar in the photo, but to any ad orientem altar. Not just fashion, but cost. Malphono, I’ve seen the Roman OF Mass said ad orientam at a byzantine altar. I’ve also seen the Dominican mass done both ad orientam and vesus populem. And the Roman OF done ad orientam by a bishop (in a side chapel).Perhaps it wasn’t clear, but the reference in my earlier post was not to the specific altar in the photo, but to any ad orientem altar.
Yes, I know. And it still stands that the Novus Ordo done ad orientem is a rarity. That was my point in the first place.Malphono, I’ve seen the Roman OF Mass said ad orientam at a byzantine altar. Even the EF can be said vs populem; it’s been done for centuries at several large parishes where there is either a tomb or other “feature” in front of the altar.
That being said, the ideal for the EF is ad orientam…
And the Rubrics for the OF leave it to the priest and the physical layout.
Vs populem was more widely permitted so that people could better see and hear. It’s become traditional, per canon law, so it’s probably here to stay.

One of our parishes is being rented by an ethnic group for regular Sunday Latin Rite Mass (OF). They use the Tetrapod for Mass. They cannot use the altar because they can’t use it ad orientam because the tabernacle is in the middle.I’ve seen the Roman Mass said at a Byzantine Altar, and a Byzantine Mass at a Roman Altar.
They can, but are ignorant. The OF can be said ad orientam. Saying it on the tetrapod is actually a liturgical abuse…One of our parishes is being rented by an ethnic group for regular Sunday Latin Rite Mass (OF). They use the Tetrapod for Mass.
