Alter Server

I am in Middle School and would like to be an alter server. I feel that I want to have a more active part in the mass (one of my protestant friends asked me, “What, you don’t have enough with all the sitting, standing, and kneeling” LOL ) I have constantly asked our pastor and many others in the parish office about this, but noone ever seems to get back to me. Should i talk to my family about switching to another church where they constantly have alter server training?

Have you tried talking with your pastor about this (not just leaving a message, or asking him after Mass). Thy to arrange a meeting to get this resolved. Otherwise, you’re just some annoying grade schooler. They need to know you’re willing to take this seriously.

Changing parishes is a big decision, and I don’t think it’s really worthwhile, just to be an altar server.

yeah but you should have seen them before we made the necessary alterations, pitiful.

in our parish altar server training and meetings are 4 times a year, announced in the bulletin, on the website, at CCD and at every Mass. new people never show up, even though we call those families who signed up through CCD or stewardship Sunday, and they invariably complain “nobody called me”. Call the office when they reopen after the holiday, ask the secretary to give you the name and number of the person who trains altar servers, and make the call yourself.

I am a female altar server, and I cannot extoll altar serving’s virtues enough. It sounds to me like your parish is not very welcoming of new servers. Try talking to an actual server about it. Chances are, your priest has nothing to do with it. Mine doesn’t. It all falls on a servant leader, who happens to be my dad!

Hi there my son is an altar server and we arranged to see father when he wasnt busy with mass and other things we went and spoke to him, myself and my son, and he encouraged my son to sit and observe for a couple of weeks what goes on around the altar and exactly what the servers do and then to go back to him after this and see if he still wanted to become a server.
After about three weeks we spoke to father again let him know my son was still interested and he took him to measure him for an alb as hes only small he needed one of the smallest ones all the other children are a few years older then him.
The next week he began altar serving and absolutely loves it he has been serving for almost three years now in church and father also requests him at school mass.
If altar serving is something you really want to do then make an appointment to speak to father again it could just be that when you catch him he is busy or something else is on his mind maybe it has slipped his mind.
Making an appointment to see him will allow him to see that you are serious and also he can concentrate more as you have made an appointment and not caught him off guard.
