Alternatives to "Catholicism" by Richard McBrien

Greetings:

I am intellectually starving and in search of rock solid Catholic theology. I mistakenly pulled Richard McBrien’s Catholicism out of my bookcase the other day (which I must have pinched from my mother years ago, little did I know she is evidently a closet liberal or was hoodwinked by McBrien, like many others).

I found numerous misleading and simply inaccurate statements in his book, I’ll just leave it at that. I would consider burning it in my fireplace, but it would likely stink up the entire neighborhood . . .

Unlike McBrien, what Catholic theologians are more in line with moral absolutism and do not contradict Catholic dogma? Many thanks in advance.

I bought that book on the recommendation of the pastoral associate of our parish. I didn’t know what to do with it either. It ended up in the trash.

I certainly am not the one to recommend deep theological readings. Peter Kreeft is a brilliant writer whose work you can trust to be authentic, but you probably know that already. Someone else will be able to suggest something that you haven’t already read, I am sure.

I personally very much like Theology and Sanity by Frank Sheed. He seems very orthodox and the book is quite readable.

Gosh - there is so much - It depends somewhat on what you are looking for.
If you are interested in the mystical / contemplative side of the Church, have a look at the book in my signature. It’s an excellent introduction to several saints and their writings and is quite “readable”.

Although I haven’t read any - I understand that Scott Hahn has some very good books on the mass and other topics.
