My wife and I have attendant classes for NPF years ago and we have tried to follow it. We both know that it works. I, however thought that there must be a better way to take readings and such than to do it all yourself. We are looking into getting a Babycomp. They are very expensive but most reviewers love them.

Here is my issue. Why do I not hear more about this device from our NPF advocates? There are also other devices as well that are not as expensive but do work. Here are some of those devices:
OvaCue
Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor

I do know that the Babycomp (as well as the Ladycomp) claim that they can also be used to avoid getting pregnant. The OvaCue also states the same thing. I would think that the ClearBlue Easy is just made for fertility, and will not tell you much other than if you are ovulating. I do know that CCL has a program called CyclePro, which I was also thinking about buying, but going to a computer every day was not practical (my work gives me a computer, and they can take it away anytime)

Back to my questions. Has anyone tried these? Why do I not hear more about the devices here? Are they even Church approved? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Rico,

The ClearBlue Easy monitor is actually used in the Marquette Model of NFP. Here is some more info about it:

nfp.marquette.edu/

I believe others on the forum have used LadyComp and other devices, and I’m sure they will be around shortly to give you more info 🙂

I know what you mean. Its like there are two NFP worlds. There is the Catholic world of Catholic individuals teaching other Catholics a form of NFP. CCL teaches sympto thermo. There are a few other Catholic groups that teach Sympto Thermo. Dr. Hilgers, a Catholic doctor, is busy promoting his Creighton Fertility Care system. The Marquette Method is affiliated with a Catholic school and very much has a Catholic componant.

The thing is there is a world of NFP and Fertility Awareness that has nothing to do with the Catholic Church. I think the big difference comes in assuring that when these methods are taught, that Catholics are getting the moral training to understand the moral use of NFP. That’s at least one reason. The other reason is that CCL and other groups volunteered for this with the Church. Its like how the attorney listed on the advertisments on the back of the bulletin is likely the listing of a member of the parish.

I think the big thing that most of us can be unaware of these devices is that we primarily get exposed to NFP through the Church. NFP is not terribly widely known. I do know some people who use it that aren’t Catholic. Many use it to get pregnant. I know a few who use it because its eco-friendly. But they certainly don’t use it in the same manner Catholics are supposed to use it.

I’ve never heard of the Babycomp before. The others are not recommended as useful for avoidance, only for achieving pregnancy, but this one can be used for either.

You’re right, though - very expensive.

In my home town of Rockford, Illinois we had one abortion clinic This past summer purely because of reasons of health issues, the state of Illinois closed it down even when some of the inspectors were pro choice! The clinic was in violation of several state criteria governing health clinics. This past week the clinic decided it would not reopen because of “a lack of support from the community.” Duh! How could anyone in their right mind support a place that kills children? Anyhow it was an answer to 40 years worth of prayers of men and women of all religious back grounds, not just Catholics! **YAY!

I suggest that you research the Marquette Model.

Most of the fertility monitors are for achieving, not avoiding. You still need to chart and use the monitor as a complement. Marquette has a system that uses Creighton observations plus the monitor.

What does this have to do with the topic being discussed?

Whoa, that’s amazing!!
I’ve been dreaming of such a device for years!
What la marquette uses is not even close as efficient in avoiding as this, as a matter of fact, you cannot use the ovulation predictor to avoid pregnancy.
Never mind the cost, when I think of the months and months of abstinence after each birth!

I’ll sure be spreading the word! Thank you so much!

ClearBlue is what I use - Marquette model has worked for us for 11 years. I highly recommend taking a course if you haven’t already using this model. NFP is very effective, spread the word!

The device the person posted is for avoiding. The method it uses is a combination of temperature and statistical analysis of past cycles. It claims to be 93% effective at avoiding pregnancy. It starts off comparing your temperatures to about 700,000 cycles it has in its computer system. As you chart your own, it learns your pattern.

Honestly though in regards to charting software, I’d say the Catholic organizations are behind.
I mean look at how nice this charting system is: sympto.org/easy-video_en.html

Don’t forget the Billings method. If you’ve got toilet paper and can count to three, you’ve got all the technology you need! (In fact more technology tends to screw it up. Billings requires you to be very careful of what meds you take as may meds can alter mucus symptoms).

I used Billings for about 5 years and was satisfied with it, we changed to Creighton (which is similar) for health reasons. I was always able to identify “peak”. My ob knows Creighton, Billings and Symptothermal, and he thinks Billings is a good system.

But lots of people seem to not trust Billings much, and that’s fine. Other methods are good options—it’s nice to have other options.

Note that Baby Comp includes “Gender Selection”. I would think for that alone, it might be worthwhile looking at Lady Comp instead, because it doesn’t include that.

I’m not saying you have to use that “feature”, but having it could get tempting. And why support a product that has this?

93% is not that great. I’ll take my charts any day.

First, thank you for all of your (name removed by moderator)uts. I hope to hear more.
I also noticed that I said “NPF” instead of “NFP”. Sorry if I confused anyone.

Just so we are clear, the babycomp/ladycomp have a 99.3% effective rate as stated in their website.

I use a LadyComp to measure my BBT every morning and the Persona ovulation system (although I am thinking of changing that one to the clearblue!).

The LadyComp is amazing. It’s so easy to use and as other users have said, it’s 99.3% effective. The only things to mention are that if your wife has a fever or has a very bad nights sleep, the BBT reading won’t be as accurate and the LadyComp might throw a ‘red’ light at you for a few days. But, if you’re keeping an eye on other signs as well (CM/OPK), you should be able to compensate for this 🙂

It’s a lot of money, but IMO, it’s certainly worth it.

I also have been using the LadyComp for about six months. We actually did get pregnant using it, however, we were not being as careful, and it was a “yellow” day, so no fault of the machine. That being said, if you are trying to avoid for now, I would be pretty strict about only using the greens after ovulation. But it is a great device.
