Am I a convert or not?

Hi everyone. I hope I posted this in the right section.
I was raised non-denominational protestant and I always had a respect for God growing up. I was never baptised because my family did not believe in infant baptism. I did the “ask Jesus into your heart” thing when I was maybe 6 I guess. I rebelled againts God from about 17 years old untill I was about 26. Then I started going to a Lutheran church for a year then I sort of became Catholic in my heart alittle over a year and a half ago. My question is… would you consider me still a protestant convert? Or was a just someone who believed in Jesus but was technically never really a Christian because I was never baptised? Thoughts? Opinions? Just curious because I am going to be Baptized in The Church this Saturday. 🙂

I was always Catholic, but I consider myself a convert. I think conversion is a radical change of the heart. I also think every devout Catholic experienced a conversion at some point in his life, characterized by a moment of “personal encounter” with Christ. In your case, it seems more like a journey towards the Church, but I am sure that when you were about 26, something special happened in your heart 🙂

Nothing in this world makes me so happy as catechumens. They fill my heart with incredible joy, because I grasp just how much Christ rejoices at the idea of giving Himself to them in Communion!
 
I think so.

I was baptized into the Catholic Church 2 years ago (being invalidly baptized twice before - long story there). I consider myself a convert as well.

I think you would be a convert, but then, since you have never been baptized before,

maybe you wouldn’t be… good question for one of the priests here !

I will say a Rosary just for you this Saturday night before our 8:00 Mass.

Congratulations!

And I think yes, since the common options are “cradle” Catholic & Catholic convert, I think you’re officially a convert, but I could be wrong 🙂
 
I’d look into RCIA and all that. Then, if you start with it this fall, then next year you can be baptized and come into full communion with the church. In your heart, you have been taking the right steps. I, too, was bapized in a Protestant church (Baptist). That baptism was considered valid enough that I didn’t need to be baptized when the Easter Vigil came around. But I went through the RCIA program first. Consider it the intro into the Catholic church. You may want to talk with a priest as well.

If you haven’t been baptized then you would be treated as a non christian, and at the Easter Vigil you would receive baptism of water which would wipe out all sin and punishment over your entire life. Then you would be a brand new spanking catholic christian.

If you had been baptised correctly at any time by anyone before, then you would be considered a convert. And if your previous baptism was correct, then you would not be baptised again, but would go thu the rite of reception into the church at the Easter Vigil.

Whether you’ve been baptized or not determines whether you’re a candidate (already baptized) or a catechumen (not yet baptized). Some people would apply “convert” only to catechumens, but these days most people seem to refer to both as converts. 🙂
 
I was baptized at the age of 12, and came into the church at the age of 34. I still consider myself a convert because I “converted” from Protestantism. What surprises me now is the number in my class compared to those who have come later. There were a total of 35 people coming into the church when I went through RCIA. Anymore it seems like there are fewer than 10. :confused:
