I stood as a Christian witness for a niece and a nephew in Catholic baptism in the last several years. I am starting RCIA in the fall and was wondering if I automatically become a godfather to them once I am confirmed? Is there anything I should do to “upgrade” my status or is is this not necessary?

The children’s godparents remain the ones who stood as godparents at their baptisms. Your status as a Christian witness does not change. However, although godparents usually take on the role of sponsor at confirmation, if these godparents are for some reason unable to do so, once you are Catholic you will be qualified to act as a sponsor for your niece and nephew at confirmation.
