Am I being complacent working for this company?

I work for a large clincal research corporation, that I just found out is doing embryonic stem cell research, and is one of the most vocal companies for the liberization of embryonic stem cel research.

Am I being complacent working for them? I only work in the mailroom and have nothing directly to do with the research. I love the people I work with and for. This company also has great benefits. One of which I’m against is same sex partner benefits.

I’m very confused as to what to do and I feel like my heart is telling me that I should quit. I don’t want to be a part of the destruction of human life. Especially the most vulnerable.

So do I quit or stay?

It’s really up to you. You aren’t doing anything sinful, and you can use this as a chance to be a great christian witness. Also, people workingin mailrooms work their way up, maybe you could turn things around. God can do great things through you, but make sure to pray, because he could also ask you to leave (although I am sure he will only do this if he has something lined up for you so you can make bills)

  1. *]You are not a researcher who is performing the research.
    *]You are not a manager who supervises and organizes the research
    *]You are not a company officer (vice president, president, ceo) who directs the research.

    So far, nobody could reasonably infer that you materially contributed from that research. However:

    *]You (do/do not) profit from the research.
    #4 is a sticky question: if you participate in the company 401(k) or ESPP and, thus, receive profits that result from products/services developed as a result of the embryonic stem cell research, then that fact (being a part owner of the company) might be morally questionable. There is, however, a fairly easy fix: divest, to the degree possible, any company stock that you hold. You may not be able to do so for all of the stock (due to vesting rules), but that which you can divest yourself of, you should. And, as you are able to do more (when more shares vest), divest as soon as possible.

    As to you working there, that depends on you. Do they force you to suppress your identity as a Christian while you are on the job? Or can you be you? (Some companies have diversity programs that allow everybody but Christians to express their diversity) If the work environment does not put undue pressure on you and you do not, in of yourself, feel uncomfortable working there, I’d say by all means continue working there. Remember the words of our Lord: Mat 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
    You have a tremendous opportunity to be that light.
 
Unless the company itself is doing research that is immoral like embryonic stem cell research or its mission is to do unchristian things, I see you at a limited responsibility because your job does not directly lead to assitance of evil or formal co-operation. If they did do immoral research then you should find a new job. It sounds like the head of the company are vocal about personal beliefs and you are not guilty of that (they could do that regardless of you doing your job or not).
Obviously other things like working at a mail place of Planned Parenthood or and abortion mill would be wrong since their business is in direct violation of God’s commandments.
Ultimately ask a priest or moral theologian who can talk specifics with you about your situation.
 
all organizations are made up of individuals. these individuals work harmoniously to achieve an objective. you, pretty much know that. don’t try to justify or gather sympathy for the devil.

quit. a healthy conscious is a grateful conscious.
 
Thanks all of you for your thoughts. I found out today that the company I work for does not do embryonic stem cell research, we are a consulting company that only collects the data for the companies that contract with us. I guess I was misinformed about what we do. Not everything you read on the web is correct. This was a good lesson for me. Next time I ask the people that know for sure.

another better source of info about your company is the annual report

we manage our own personal investments, retirement accounts, and some family trusts, and our brokers have standing orders not to invest in companies that advocate embryonic stem cell research and other problematic activities (we also do not invest in companies whose main activity is gaming, alcohol, porn etc). That puts a lot of mainstream S&P companies off limits. it is still up to us to do research, esp. on drug and medical companies. I personally could not work for such a company or profit from their activities through investment, but that is not a blanket moral judgement, but a personal judgment. I actually believe my guilt as a shareholder would be greater than my guilt as say a mailroom employee with no direct part to play in the problem activities.
 
Most of you will be glad to hear that I quit this job. I just can’t stand the thought of profiting from the innocent unborn or otherwise. My last day is February 29th, and I can’t wait to get out of there.

Good for you, lizcrafts, but I thought you found out that your company does not do embryonic stem cell research? Maybe they somehow profit from it or support it? Lots of posters raised good points that you might not need to worry about being in the mail room, but personally, I could not work in a company or building that performs or supports killing embryos.

Anyway, good for you for going with your instinct, & may God bless you in your future!
 
it will be a bumpy ride. you looked into the eyes of the fallen one and did not flinch. know this, the fallen one does not take well to losing a battle. he will return, and make no mistake he will bring reinforcements. be prepared. trust in the guidance of the Spirit and continue strengthening, day by day, your resolve.

and remember, to follow the Nazarene means to sacrifice. such sacrifice takes all manner of situations. this if but one.
