Jobs are not always secure. I won’t identify the persons involved but an employee was let go after 20 years of service without any explanation. She had cancer and requested going on leave to treat it. That is when she was let go.
She only had a year left to retirement, but in losing her job, she lost her retirement. She finally got her job back, but had to get TV news people on the case. She is now reinstated and will more than likely get her retirement when the time comes.
Companies can be sneaky about things, too. One man I knew worked for a place that had a policy where if an individual was reprimanded, it went on his official record. After three reprimands, the company could fire the person. They were priming this person to fire him, I am sure. He was suffering from heart failure, and he only had a short time to go to get his retirement. He went on disability, and they stopped harassing him.
It seems that companies are not always monitored for these injustices, and if you don’t have a Union, it is harder to fight it.
