My friend works for a country radio station. I don’t listen to the station at all. The station is currently going around the various state parks we have here to promote them. Essentially, they just pull up to the beach with the radio station’s van, playing the station’s music and the person goes around as the station’s mascot for about an hour or so.

I was asked to help take photos for the events. I already had done it a few weeks ago (also dressed as the mascot). All was well.

Well, he had asked me to do it again a week ago for this past Saturday. I had said yes to it and was all set to go to help out take photos for the radio station’s Facebook. Well, the Friday evening before the day I was to help out…a thought came to mind in regards to the content played on the station. I felt like it would be wrong for me to help out with a station that plays less than moral content from time to time.

The problem is, I don’t listen to the station, but I felt like they didn’t always play good stuff. I guess I assumed some secular country music wasn’t always good in values.Well, the other dilemma was that it would be last minute if I decided to say no to this and he wouldn’t have had time to find a replacement to take photos.

So, I finally felt I shouldn’t help out because I didn’t want to help out a station that at times plays immoral content. My whole Saturday morning and afternoon would have been spent helping with this.

When I told my friend the decision he was quite upset. I looked at what songs the station played, I realized that one song they played promoted a one-night stand and/or a relationship with no strings attached. He told me that the station played 90% family content. Even if that were true, I still didn’t feel comfortable promoting this station by helping take photos.

I tend to be scrupulous and worry this was merely me being scrupulous. I know had I went, my conscience would’ve been nagging me the whole time. I even asked a priest about it and, if I understood him well, told me I should not partake with something that plays immoral content.

Well, I guess he was able to find someone in time to help him. Was I too extreme?

ummm…although I’m not sure what I would have done in your place. I guess it is a little bit of ‘does the means justify the end’, in that, yes you did comit to a friend, but by doing it you were were promoting something you felt strongly against. In the end I believe that you did not act to extreme in the situation, and if this person was truely a friend although he may be a little upset at the time, he should understand and support your decision.

In retrospect, you should have looked into the radio station before you committed. I’m willing to bet the friend isn’t frustrated at your choice of morals, but that you backed out at the last second leaving him high and dry. This is a horrible place to put anyone in.

It was your right to back out, but the last minute notice is likely what is causing the strife, rather than your moral decision.

agree with Whiteacre girl – check out things in the beginning. It is a tough world out there and it is hard to find 100% of anything anymore. We have disagreement within our own church on major items.

I’m proud of you and give you an A+ for guts. Letting the guy hanging was rough though.

So lesson learned and be done with it. pray for them to play 100% family since they don’t need the 10%.

May God shower you with His blessings for your moral courage!!!

As long as the country station plays Dixie Chicks or/and Miranda Lambert, there’s nothing “less than moral” about that. (Which is to say, yes, I think you were unnecessarily scrupulous.) 🙂
