Hello all!

I’m in RCIA and I won’t officially become Catholic until tomorrow. However I wonder, do the Good Friday rules on abstinence and fasting pertain to me today? If I broke these rules, do I have to go to confession tomorrow before the vigil mass? Or if because I’m not technically a catholic yet, does what happened today not “count” so to speak? I didn’t realize it was a fast and abstinence day. I just found out and I’m literally getting ready to leave for my birthday dinner. I’m going to order shrimp and try not to eat much, but I’ve already eaten a full meal today. Should I be fretting over this?

I do not think it applies to you yet. You are still not a Catholic.

The laws of fast and abstinence are ecclesiastical laws. You are not bound to observe them until you have been received into full communion with the Church – which will happen tomorrow. The Code of Canon Law is quite explicit:
**Can. 11 Merely ecclesiastical laws bind those who were baptised in the catholic Church or received into it, and who have a sufficient use of reason and, unless the law expressly provides otherwise, who have completed their seventh year of age. **
Don’t fret. Happy Birthday.

My friend. congratulations on joining the Church. This should be a weekend of great joy for you, not a time of worry.

I too will be received into the church tomorrow and also have a propensity to worry, although you are not bound by church law until you are received, I would say the fact that you didn’t know about today being a day of fasting and abstinence would free you from any culpability.

Thank you all so much for the reassurance. I’m so happy to be coming home!!!
