Am I coveting the new kindle?

I was looking at this on the internet and I was thinking “oh my gosh, I really want this, if I had the money for this right now i would order it right now” etc. etc. And I was feeling really drawn to it and kept thinking if there was any way that I could possibly get this ASAP.

am I coveting this material possession?
 
Not to feed your want…but I received a Kindle for Christmas from my husband and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!

You can download The Bible for $0.99!!! As well as many other spiritual books.

I would not say desiring the Kindle is “coveting” any more then wanting a new sweater you saw in a store display is. Now, if you neglect paying your car insurance, home mortgage/rent or other obligations just so you can have the Kindle…that might be an issue.

I would recommend putting $10 a pay aside - in a piggy bank?? - and saving up for it. The price is continuing to drop so you could easily have your Kindle in a matter of 5-6 months

This is the biggest reason why I’ve not bought one. As more and more gadgets come out with Kindle apps the less the Kindle hardware is going to be. I have it free on my phone. The only reason I want the actual Kindle is because it’s bigger and it’s almost distracting reading things on the small screen of my phone because of how often I have to “turn” the page.

right now you just want one because it really is amazing, I scoffed when they told me to get one but am thrilled with my Christmas present

we covet when place acquiring one of these ahead of other legitimate needs, envy those who have one to the point of wishing them ill, and allow thoughts of getting one, or resentment at not having one to dominate our thinking.

tip first research if the types of books you want are available for download at a cost you can afford. I am thrilled that so many Ignatius press titles are available, but a bit disappointed that the cost for most books is the same as buying in a bookstore or from amazon the actual book.

It was given to me by a family member who would love to reduce the book clutter that accumulates around me wherever I go.

dont’ just assume the book title is the book you think you are getting
the free bible is the KJV usually and at least some versions are badly indexed so you can’t go to book, chapter and verse

research kindle books the way you to other on-line purchases, look at the reviews which usually tell you if the table of contents and index work, and don’t go by the picture, even if it looks like the hardcover book it may not be the same
 
I also have the Kindle app on my phone. I used that to hold me over until I could convince my husband to buy me the Kindle. When they 1st came out they were $400+ and now they are down to $139. Plus with competition from the Sony EBook and the Nook, I see the price dropping even further.

I will say, one of the coolest features is that I can read the same book on my phone and the Kindle at the same time. So, say I am reading at home on my Kindle and then leave for a doctor’s appt or whatever. I can then pull that same book up on my phone - it will automatically sync me with the last page I read on my Kindle at home. Then that night, if I switch my to my Kindle, it will “fast-forward” me to where I left off on my phone…so so cool.

I have a pretty big screen on my phone, my main issue is that it sucks the life out of my battery. Meanwhile, the battery on my Kindle lasts for a whole month!!

also, i have a blackberry but it’s the flip phone blackberry and there is no kindle app for it. Not yet at least. I wish there was.

I would trade in for an iphone or a droid 🙂

I feel ya though I really do want one but I keep thinking about when I bought my MP3 player… it’s a fairly cheap one that I bought for $100 or so a few years ago… I can now get the same one for $20.
 
Considering the commandments against coveting have to do with coveting the things of others, no. You can get your own Kindle if you want to.

Personally, I really want an iphone, ipad and a new mac. Yes, I’m a total pushover for Apple Products. lol

Apple doesn’t make the Droid and I was dead set against such a phone as well thinking “I don’t like touch screens or anything like that, I just want a regular phone”. After a short period of adjustment I’d hate having a different phone now.

Edit: and some carriers will allow you to get a phone and take it back within so many days if you don’t like it… it’s worth a try 👍

My mom and mother-in-law both had/have the droid and both didn’t like it. I just got my blackberry a few months ago and am really happy with it.

well, to covet something is to desire it wrongfully, inordinately, or without due regard for the rights of others,
so like, desiring something that doesn’t belong to you in an inordinate way, or desiring someone in an impure way(thou shalt not covet thy neighbors wife) or desiring something so far as to be willing to offend God for it or hurt someone for it, or in this case, desiring the things of this world to eagerly…

although i can’t tell you for sure if you are coveting this thing, that’s something you’d have to meditate on or talk over with your priest, but i don’t think this would be a serious sin, and there’s nothing wrong with getting it nevertheless,

I got a Kindle for Christmas and it’s pretty cool.

The first thing I downloaded into it was Ignatius Press’ RSV:

To address your question, desiring something that is good is not, in and of itself, coveting. After all, we ought to desire good things, just so long as our desire does not become disordered in a sinful way (as others have already pointed out in this thread).

Generally speaking, coveting arises when someone is fixated on worldly things and therefore not attentive to spiritual things. Coveting also can poison our relationships because it tempts us to envy another person’s possessions, wishing we had them and the other person didn’t. Coveting causes us to mope about our lot in life while despising others because of the good fortune they enjoy. It doesn’t sound like your desire to have a Kindle falls into any of these areas.
 
No, but it’s sinful that you want a kindle and not an iPad 😃

We all have our great wants. I don’t think it’s affecting your morality
