Am I endangering my family?

I know a couple of families where the father was very successful. One was a business man and the other was a doctor, and both had large families. The problem is that they spent their life on their career instead of their families. Consequently their children have left the faith and are dealing with divorce and all sorts of vices, from alcoholism to living alternative lifestyles.

The moral of the story is that financial success is not always a blessing. It would have been better for those men to have spent their time being husbands and fathers than successful at their career. This however in no way means you shouldn’t follow this opportunity to follow your dream career. Just keep it all in perspective. A few decades from now your children will be following their own careers and your life may be over.

One of the reasons God became Man was so that we could imitate Him. Jesus wasn’t born in a stable by accident—God chose it that way. The wise thing to do is to meditate on the example of the Holy Family. Joseph supported his family with hard, menial work. No fancy house, but a holy household where the joy and peace of God reigned supreme. VIDEO

Thank you. Just to clarify, yes I quit my old job 3+ yrs ago to pursue what I’m currently doing. Now this opportunity has come to me and I’m scared. I’m scared now that I would be taking my family who is comfortable and safe, move them across the country for a shot at my dreams. I’m to the point where either I do this, continue on the path I set out on 3+ yrs ago, or I throw in the towel on this career. Like I said I’m not sure why I posted this, everyone is really excited for me as they have seen my hardwork and prayers yield an opportunity few ever get. I’m just scared and need some of gods direction.

Take the job and move because it is right for your family, not because it is a “shot at your dreams.”

I would arrange for an honest reliable housesitter (Police Check, copy of Drivers Licence and References) for the initial (3) months of the new Venture and move, while you work with this partner to see if you (a) enjoy the work, (b) are making sufficient profit and (c) that you all enjoy the environment in which you are going to live (New York City).

That way, you have not fully re-located and are able to return if this new move is unsuitable.

Pray The Holy Rosary for Jesus and Our Lady Mary’s Love, Wisdom and Guidance to flow through you all.

This is a good question and I’m not sure how to really answer it. I guess this opportunity I am being presented with is the best case scenario possible. Maybe I was being ignorant to myself about this being possible, but now that it is I really need to face it.

I’ve discussed this with my family over tha past few days. They support me 100% and think I need to go look into it further, then we will decide if its worth pursuing further, and then look for a short term apartment to try it out.

I think what has thrown me off is the fact that I almost don’t feel worthy, since all my life (like most), I have had to really fight for things. But in reality the past 3 yrs has been my fight for this opportunity.

This is a good question and I’m not sure how to really answer it. I guess this opportunity I am being presented with is the best case scenario possible. Maybe I was being ignorant to myself about this being possible, but now that it is I really need to face it.

I’m just going to throw this out there, but if I had spent the past three years making all sorts ofcsacrifices so that my husband could get into a specific career I would be upset if he threw away an amazing opportunity to enter that career. That is why I kept pointing out that this is not simply something you have decided to do, this is something that you whole family has already invested themselves in and spent three years sacrificing so that you could get into it. Accepting this isn’t just about doing what you want, but rather it is about honoring all the sacrifices your family made for you to get here. If you reject this opportunity it is, in a way, or at least could be seen as, a rejection of the hard work and sacrifice your family has put in for you over the past three years.

Also, as for feeling unworthy because you did not work enough to ‘earn’ this chance, maybe it would help to realize that sometimes it is actually charitable to allow others to give you things you did not earn and do not deserve because in so doing you are allowing them to perform corporal works of mercy and other acts of charity. Graciously accepting opportunities and help which you did not earn is actually good for the person offering you that opportunity and help. It is also an excellent way to have an earthly experience of the spiritual reality that all help we receive fro God is undeserved, but is freely given in charity. Perhaps learning how to graciously accept things in this life which you did not earn will help you to understand more fully how to react and respond to God’s freely-given graces which we have all received but which we in no way deserve.

Anyway, just some thoughts on the matter. I hope they help.
