Deacon Ed:
I have a procedure from 10 years ago that states precisely what I stated. I don’t know what authority issued it since it was contained in a collection of documents and it is unattributed.

Deacon Ed
Lacking Church authority, said procedure is (and was) not worth the piece of paper it was printed on…

Deacon Ed:

You couldn’t even direct us to the book within which this directive is states?

No. These are notes from a class on Liturgy that I took before my ordination. They had been compiled from a number of different sources.

:o I did remain a little uncomfortable with the dilution process mentioned above but hey we have all learned! Good fruit!

Thank God for forums on these topics. We all have much to learn. We must read the directives from Rome when they are published. Let us listen to the Holy Father today and abide by the fulness of truth.

God Bless you Deacon Ed and Crusader!!! I have learned loads.

Ah, that explains it.

You should know better before trusting something you hear at a Catholic seminary . . .

😉

May I come in on the issue of too much Precious Blood being consecrated? A few years ago, I was the Director of Liturgy and head sacristan and a count error was made which left us, at a very large parish, with a large cup of Precious Blood more than we needed. After Mass, everyone seemed to have disappeared so I consumed the entire amount, but I did stay and do some extra tasks so that the effects of that amount of alcohol would wear off before I drove home. No one wants these things to happen but errors do happen and we do the best we can to resolve the problem. Grandma

Grandma- I can identify with you. Several times in our church, a goodly amount was left to the deacon to drink. Thank God altar wine is not like the high volume fortified wine. At our parish, receiving under both species is only done on very special occasions.

May God Bless You,
Deacon Tony

How did Communion end with Precious Blood to be consumed? The GIRM is clear that the Precious Blood needs to be consumed before the Mass continues on.

We have fouled-up and had more than a large cup left. What happens? The EMsHC and the altar servers, and even the celebrant at times face the credence table and give one another communion until the Precious Blood is consumed so the Mass can then continue.

Unless you placed the extra Precious Blood in a special sealed vessel and then into the tabernacle (a huge no-no for this reason), the Son of God would be sacramentally exposed for the remainder of the Mass.

That’s harshly abusive…

Last Holy Thursday too many chalices were prepared and consecrated and t was a dreadful sight afterwards.

Our Liturgy Director (God have mercy on her) called her firends up onto the Sanctuary and gave them a ‘cup’ each. They were chatting and then to my horror I noticed they were trying to push the Precious Blood onto the Altar servers who were busy tidying up after the Mass.

This image has stayed with me over the months and I am gonna make sure it does not happen again. It was a dreadful sight. Full of ignorance and sacrilage.

Thanks for all the responses. Some good fruitful dialogue going on here.

I continue to hear this argument around here, “Once the Body of Christ ceases to be bread, it ceases to be the Body of Christ.” They are refering to the small particles left. Where does this argument come from? Isn’t Jesus truly present in the bread crumbs?

As long as the crumbs retain the accidents of bread the Real Presence persists. Once it ceases to be bread (for example, when we digest it) the Real Presence also ceases. Note this has nothing to do with it being recognizable as bread (which is what the group who claims small particles don’t have the Real Presence) and everything to do with the accidents of bread (and, for that matter, wine).

NOT allowing the Mass to continue on until ALL the Precious Blood is consumed is one of the few liturgical abuses that was ever fixed around here.

What you suggest is a hardcore abuse. Something that needs to be fixed.
