Thank you everyone for trying to help me. Also, thank you to those who have been praying for me. I truly appreciate it. :grouphug: I wish I would have responded sooner, but like you know I have been going through a lot. I’m happy to say that ever since I posted this question, I haven’t masturbated once. 🙂 I feel a lot better, and I definitely realize masturbation only contributed to my depression. My head is a lot clearer now, and I never want to masturbate again. Like I said before, I hated the act. It was only used as a stress reliever, but it was very shortlived, and the stress would always come back worse. So, thank you for all the suggestions.

I am trying really hard to get support for what has happened to me in the past. Hopefully, I will be able to find that support very soon. I am tired of these suicidal feelings, and just wish they would go away. I’m trying to find comfort in the positive things, though. Like, I’m trying to finish up a novel. 🙂 That makes me happy. I’m also taking my doggy out for more walks. It’s kind of theraputic… I pray so much now that I don’t even have a designated time to pray. Whenever I’m feeling down, I pray. :gopray2: Whenever something pleasant happens, I pray to God and thank him. Oh, and something cool happened last week when I was feeling really hopeless. I looked out the window and saw a shooting star! I felt like that was God’s way of telling me, “Everything will be better soon. Just hold on.” :hug3:

Everything won’t just get better.

Please, get help. Tell your mom, if she doesn’t get you professional help, tell a pastor, tell a school counselor, follow some of the links other’s have posted. Please don’t try to do this on your own.

This is serious stuff, you need help.

I have noticed that OP is not in this conversation since the first posting. I pray that the posts of condemnation has not hurt her. Please stop posting lectures on the sinfulness of masturbation. I am so sick of hearing people on a soapbox and not attending to the whole person.

Yes, I know it’s very serious stuff. I know it gets worse before it gets better. I’m trying the best I can to get the help I need. It’s just really hard, you know? I’ve been reaching out for years, but I’m trying to make a true solid effort right now before I end up hurting myself. I may go to the doctors office this weekend for another reason, but I will think about asking her if she could find me a counselor.

Just for the person above me, I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t call me a troll. Just because I don’t post here that much does NOT mean I’m a troll. Trolls cause trouble. I don’t see how I’m causing any trouble here? I just wanted advice is all. Since you failed to hear me before, I don’t think I need to explain myself to you. If anything, you’re the troll for not contributing anything to this topic. I’ve just been trying to cope, and sorry I don’t spend my days constantly on the internet. 🤷 Obviously, I have more important things to attend to. I don’t think that makes me a troll…

P.S. - For everyone who has posted, I have read every single one. Sorry I couldn’t respond to them all, though. Like I said, I’m going through a lot right now. It really warms my heart that all of you care so much, so thank you again.

If you need anything specific, or want to talk please send me PM. I can find people in your area who you can call if need be. Good luck.

Thanks for letting us know.🙂
remember patience is a viture that needs to be practiced towards one’s self.

I know this is an older post, but I just wanted to say that I have been struggling with the same things, depression and masturbation, even when I started trying to go to daily Mass to make up for my past sins, which made me feel terrible. I am turning 24 this month.

I am very drawn to my faith, but I have struggled with chastity, because so many of my boyfriends did not want to wait until marriage and I got dumped by the people I loved most because I wanted to date chastely. I started to get frustrated and upset by this, and after loosing my job unjustly I felt that I should be able to satiate my curiosity, or feel good if I wanted to, since I felt I lost what I cared about most by trying to follow the church.

After I was given the grace to overcome this warped thinking, I started to go to Mass daily and pray the rosary daily like I used to. Yet even after this, I fell again because of sleeping in, giving in to sexual thoughts, curiosity about my body and my self indulgence. I did not learn how to deny myself while growing up.

I just went to confession again yesterday. I want to pray the 15 prayers of St. Bridget marypages.com/BrigittaEnglish.htm every day for a year for the intention to deny myself, take up my cross and follow Jesus, as he says is necessary to be saved.

Mark 8:34-35 (NIV) Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.”

I also recommend the Novena to Mary Undoer of Knots: theholyrosary.org/maryundoerknots

And the book: The Way of a Pilgrim - when I first learned the prayer that monks would repeat thousands of times a day: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Don’t feel like it isn’t worth it to try to live better, you will always feel better when you try to overcome that and practice the opposite virtue.

God bless you for consulting us, you are not the only one.

Masturbation may be common in our society, but is not normal and it is not good. To be tempted by sex is normal. Sex is powerful. Sex can be enjoyable. Sex is not evil. Each of us normally finds the body of the opposite sex attractive and interesting. For a 17 year old male, the female body is especially interesting. What masturbation does however is present you with an empty pleasure in envisioned experiences that are not real. Sex is a great power and a great expression of love, real love, with another human person. Sex is creative and in it you share in God’s joy in creation. But is meant to be experienced with a real person. Not an imagined person and not by ourselves. Masturbation creates nothing. The devil presents us with many illusions and often distorts our natural desire for something good, into an action that is not good. To respect yourself as a man or woman is best done in a life lived as pure as possible. By doing that, you respect yourself, you respect your body, and most importantly, you respect God who gave you this desire and your body. Also, you respect the person you might one day marry. A Catholic who does this sinful act should not fear confession. You’re not going to be the first person ever to confess this sin. The priest is a human being and he will understand. And with Christ’s mercy and the authority given him to act in the person of Christ, he will forgive you and your sins will be forgiven.

I think we should all wear brown scapulars.

I kind of forgot about mine, but after reading a couple of posts, I put one back on

MyLoveWaits, you are not trash. You are beautiful and God will always love you. Yes it is a sin, but trust me you are at least more virtuous than I am!

No matter what, there will always be people out there, and on here, who care about about you and who will be praying for you regularly. You’re never alone. I wouldn’t have any qualms about marrying a woman who has been a victim, and I know there are plenty of other guys who would take such a wife and love and protect her.

God Bless.

Do any of you have some helpful advice? I don’t know where else to turn. I feel so alone and depressed… Please help me?
Thank you for your honesty. Where to begin?..

I was addicted to masturbating for the longest time. I started when I was 4… that’s right, 4… and didn’t learn it was a sin until I was 13. Some of what you wrote parallels my experiences exactly. Even as a young child, I would have guilt and feel bad afterwards, and I didn’t understand why. I knew that it was something I had to hide… my mother had scolded me as a child for doing it, but I liked the way it felt.

It took me the next 12 years to stop… and those were some incredibly painful years of addiction and self-hatred. And boy did I feel alone and still do. It’s been 5-6 years since I have stopped, but I still am tempted from time to time. But, I want you to know that it IS possible to stop, and the road is different for everyone.

First - stop the beating yourself up afterwards. This is definitely a temptation of the devil. He tempts you to do it, and then tempts you with self-hatred afterwards. He wants to destroy you in any way he can, so he goes at it from both ends.

The biological urge for sex is powerful. Once aroused, it is REALLY hard to use self control. Hard - but not impossible. The feelings you experience are “normal.” Those “good” feelings are “supposed” to be there. It is quite understandable that a person gives in and masturbates to relieve this urge. But here’s the catch, (at least from my experience), the more I gave in, the more powerful the urge was the next time, and the next time, and the next time. Those feelings need to be stopped in the beginning before they grow! Masturbating destroys what sex was made for. The pleasure is supposed to be there. God wants you to have great sex… but in the context of marriage only. Masturbating slowly destroys this. But the good news is… what we have broken, God can not only fix it, but He can make it even better than it was before. God loves to fix our brokenness. So there is always HOPE!

I came to realize that the biggest weakness for masturbating came when I was by myself. I was by myself quite frequently, and loneliness leads us to turn inwards. The devil wants to isolate us because we are weaker when we are alone. (Isolation is different than solitude, btw) So, the first step you can make towards trying to stop is to try and busy yourself and be around people as much as you can. Also - STOP THE TEMPTATION AS SOON AS IT STARTS! Cut it off from the get-go. It’s the easiest time to resist. Because once the temptation starts to grow, it can become really strong very quickly.

Yes, people will say that masturbating is “normal,” and it is true that most people have done it at some point, if not on a regular basis. But just because “most” people have done it doesn’t make it okay or right. Everyone has sinned. It may be the norm to sin, but that doesn’t make it okay.

We are human, and we are weak. In a way, this is a huge grace. I realized that in my human weakness, by myself, I am powerless to resist my human biological urges to have sex. This is where God and the intercession of the saints come in. God is always trying to direct us back towards Him - to depend entirely on Him. If we were 100% strong in and of ourselves, think about how easy it would be to forget God. God loves us so much that He allows us to sin, in the hopes that we will realize how much we need Him. Imagine that! God loves us so much that He would allow us to hurt Him, just so we can realize how much He loves us. That’s exactly what the Cross is.
God’s not looking down at you and saying, “you horrible, weak creature of mine! How dare you do such an abominable thing!” No. He’s allowed you (us) to experience this weakness, at His own expense and hurt, in order that we might realize that yes, in fact, God loves us infinitely.

The next point I wanted to address is that you not try and analyze too much. That can also be a temptation. It can be good to try and figure out the triggers for when you masturbate so that you can avoid these behavior and change it, but analyzing why you might be drawn to it (such as being molested as a child) does nothing to help you now. If you have some unresolved issues from childhood that you need to work through, you should work through them, and I recommend with an experienced therapist. (I’m actually surprised you aren’t seeing a therapist after you told your mom about the abuse… she should look into that for you)
But, trying to analyze why you might do it based on your whole life history will probably lead you nowhere. (Again, this is from my experience) Really try to stay focused on the present and what can help you now. It is very easy to get caught up in the past, and then you forget to live in the present! I think you are trying to find a reason because you think that if there is no reason, that makes you some horrible, impure person who has committed a mortal sin - when that is simply not true.
If you read the Catechism, it states that masturbation is, indeed, a mortal sin, but the sin can be “lessened” due to many factors, including compulsion.
To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability. - 2352
It’s still a sin, and a grave one, and it needs to be stopped at all costs. But, that does not make you a horrible person for having committed it. God’s mercy is greater than that. You are valuable simply because you are loved by God. You are infinitely loved, and so your value and self-worth are equal to that of the saints… even to the Blessed Mother. Why? Because we are all infinitely loved! There is no end to how much we are loved - and THAT is what defines us.

God’s love is what makes you pure. Even if you have committed the impurest sin, God’s love is far greater than that, and all it takes is one Confession, … one glance of Christ’s love that purifies you.

I do want to note, that even after Confession, you may not suddenly “feel” pure. There may be a reason God allows you to not have the consolation of “feeling” pure, I don’t know. But if you confess and you still are struggling, don’t think you have failed or something. God’s bigger than all of that… he’s bigger than our failures… and repeated failures. And He is bigger than our feelings. Consolation is a grace, but it is not necessary.

You might want to consider learning about St. Mary of Egypt. She’s an old saint of the Church that no one talks about. She was a sex addict (I’m talking some pretty racy stuff) who ran away from her wealthy home at the age of 12 to prostitute herself - sometimes she would offer her services for the sheer pleasure of it without pay! She has an amazing conversion story, and became a mystic who wandered the desert for 40 or so years.

I will keep you in my prayers today, and I hope you gained some consolation from reading my post. Trust me, I know how very hard it is to struggle with this. You are not alone, and you are a beautiful person. The fact that you desire purity is a sure sign of God’s grace and the Holy Spirit working in you. Don’t lose hope! Remember, God not only can fix what was broken, He can make it even better!!!
