Hi everyone. I am not accusing anyone of anything here but if someone gossips to me about someone else, I don’t know what to do. I usually just try to act uninterested and if it continues, I’ll say what I believe would be moral to happen to anyone in whatever the situation is. I am trying very hard not to judge whether or not anyone is in a state of grace and I think I am doing pretty well on that.

And one more question on a related note: Is it okay to tell someone that something is irritating you without giving details about who is involved like as in naming names. What if it is obvious to the other person who it might be that could be the culprit?

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I am not quite sure what you are asking, but my answer is: Try not to involve yourself in gossip. Pray for the person who is aggravating you. Try not to complain about other people too much. Go to confession. Do your best and remember that we are human and will never be perfect–but we can only try.

Okay. Well I guess what I mean is that sometimes people gossip to me and I don’t want to listen to it so I just say something related to it but not in a condemnatory manner of the person being gossiped about. I usually will state that I don’t know much about the situation or whatever and leave it at that.

I will change the subject, if I can to something important because they are more likely to accept changing the subject. Otherwise, sometimes I just leave. If not, I just suffer in silence as they speak.
It is sinful to damage someone else’s good name, whether what is said is true or not. Obviously, it is wrong to steal someone else’s money. It is wrong too to steal someone’s good name.
It can be all-right to speak critically about someone if you need advice. Otherwise there is no justification for gossiping about anyone else. If someone likes to gossip, I usually realize that that person will be free to gossip about myself behind my back, and then sometimes I will stay away from then from then on–then too they are less likely to find ammunition against me to use to damage my own good name.
