Am I in a state of mortal sin?

I only ask this question because I am an altar server at my church, and I have to serve Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday liturgies, and need to know if i can recieve Communion or not(as there are no confessions offered on weekdays). I drank fairly heavily, to the point of being drunk. Is this a mortal sin? Also are ordinarily mortal sins committed while drunk still considered mortal as my mental faculties were impaired? Thanks for your help.

You must have full knowledge, complete consent of the will and grave matter for it to be mortal sin. If it were me I would still confess any sin that was grave matter. You will receive advice and special graces that help you to do better in the future. You can ask the priest to hear your confession this week. You may have to catch him at daily mass tomorrow or on Good Friday. We are having stations of the cross and the Veneration of the cross services at our Church. God Bless!

Did you intend to get drunk, or did you drink without knowing it would affect you as heavily as it did? I know sometimes if I’m extra tired I can have only one or two drinks, which is normally fine for me, and be quite affected.

I second the idea of going to church maybe 15 minutes before Mass, finding the priest and asking if he would hear your confession. Or else grabbing him after Mass in the same way.

You are an altar server, you say - be that as it may, unless you’re ministering Holy Communion you are not required to receive it, even if you are serving in other ways.

Call and ask for an appointment–you might even ask over the phone. Most priests are really busy at this time of year.

Did you get drunk *and *do something else which is a mortal sin? Because while culpability is reduced if you are impaired, it is not reduced if you got yourself impaired on purpose. If you knew that last glass would put you over the top and had it anyway, that’s different from having the drinks have more of an effect than you expected.

Did you get so drunk that your ability to decide was impaired? Or were you just really giddy? If the latter, I would say it was not a mortal sin.
