Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Happy, Holy Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe today, Dec. 12! I’ve read more than one translation of Mary’s words to St. Juan Diego at Guadalupe, but the most tender of all, to me, are these:
…Am I not here, who am your mother? Are you not in the crossing of my arms?..
The sense of being held in the same arms that held Jesus, and the same arms with which she embraces all God’s children, is a source of comfort and strength. At this time in our world, we need her loving intercession more than ever before, because we can see many turning away from her Son, Who is The Way, The Truth and The Life for all. Mary is patroness of the United States and of the Americas, she is Queen of heaven and earth, yet so many hesitate to entrust themselves to her with love and confidence.

Today, on her Feast, let us offer our love – little as it may be – in reparation for our sins and the sins of the world. Let us not be afraid to ask for our own deep, ongoing conversion and the conversion of the world to Jesus who gave Himself for us through her. Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, our loving Mother, pray for us.
Jesus, I trust in You.

She is indeed the Patroness of the Americas, and with such troubling things happening here today, I take comfort that we have her intercession and protection.

Dear christofirst,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, God knew we would need her and so Jesus gave her to us from His Cross. May we never dim the light of our Marian Devotion for it will always lead us to Him Who is our All in all.

Dear Jeanne,

Thank you for loving our dear Mother, for she is undervalued in our day, especially. Let us love her more, by God’s Grace, each day, until again by His Grace He shows her to us in heaven. 🙂

Dear Megan,

Thanks for loving our Blessed Mother so much. She is (it seems to me) much neglected in our current culture. Yet, we know she continues to intercede for us with the Love God has given her for us, when He gave her to be our Mother from His Cross. May we remain close to her that she may keep us always close to Jesus, Her Son and our Brother.

Our entertainment media certainly makes it seem as though Our Lady is neglected. They too often sensationalize and glorify all of the vices, and we are too often an eager audience.

But I am happy to report that here in Los Angeles, Mary was not forgotten yesterday. When I showed up for morning Mass, I noticed a greater number of cars than usual around the church. Inside, a mariachi band was playing to a packed church in front of a large shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Most everyone was singing along to the songs of Mary (my Spanish is rusty, but I was able to pick out enough words to understand), and between songs, cries would go up, “Viva Cristo Rey! Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!” After the band finished, Mass started as usual, but this time our pastor displayed his excellent command of both English and Spanish (that morning Mass is usually only said in English), and his multi-lingual homily beautifully tied together the theme of the Marian feast with the Year of Mercy.

Dear Christofirst,

It is sad to me, whenever I see the lack of Marian devotion especially among Catholics, but I am grateful that the Mexican people have retain their Catholic heritage from the 1500’s when Mary approved to St. Juan Diego and revealed to him the tenderness of her Motherhood to all – May the hispanic communities in the USA help all to appreciate our Mother more. She is the Mother of Mercy, so I’m happy that your pastor made that link for anyone who did not see it.

Thanks for sharing the celebration, and the cry “Vivo Christo Rey!” "Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe! “Live Christ the King!” “Live Virgin of Guadalupe!” May our lives ever reflect Jesus and Mary to our world.
