Hi everyone. I wear a scapular medal as a replacement for the brown scapular. I know that one of the requirements of wearing the scapular medal or the brown scapular is to pray the rosary daily. I have heard it said that one must at least say 3 Hail Mary’s a day in order to wear it and I do try to say at least 3 Hail Mary’s a day. But I am just curious. Am I sinning by wearing the scapular medal while not praying the rosary every day? 🤷

Is this a serious post, or are you kidding?

No, it absolutely is not, in any way, shape, or form, a sin to only do part of a 100% optional devotion method. Taking half an advil may not be as effective as taking a whole advil, but breaking the pill in half doesn’t spontaneously convert it into poison.

It was a serious post. I thought it might be wrong to wear the scapular medal if I am not praying the entire rosary every day or something. 😊

Both are devotionals, so there is no sin in not doing all of it.

You obviously do not understand the reason behind or the merits of the Brown Scapular. It is not a magic charm that ‘works’ when we say a magic formula!!

Devotion to God through our Blessed Lady takes many forms the most excellent of these is of course the Rosary. Omission of the Rosary or part of it incurs no penalty since we must live our lives trying to increas in the three cardinal virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity. The Rosary helps on to do this as do all other Marian and Holy devotions.

When one decides to take the Brown Scapular and become enrolled in it there is one serious duty that is incumbent on all who wear it: that you live chastely according to your state in life. This was expressed by Our Lady during the apparitions at Fatima. If you are married live chastely giving your undivided and undiluted attention to your spouse and children. Chastle love is expressed between yon and your spouse according to the precepts of Holy Mother Church. If you are single then practice chastity through your dedication to prayer and purity.

It is important to remember that the Scapular itself is only the exterior sign of an interior devotion. Therefore in wearing it we naturally dispose ourselves to expressing devotion to Our Lord through Our Lady in whatever form that might take. Since again, at Fatima, Our Lady called for 5 decades of the Rosary daily, this would be a most winderful esxpression of devotion to Christ through Mary.

What about the promises attached to the scapular? Well there are folk who wear it thinking that the graces Our Lady promises through the scapular will be granted no matter how they conduct themselves. the truth is that the promises of great graces from Heaven are an affirmation of the spiritual value of Marian devotion. So again some form of Marian devotion is necessary for one who has taken the time to wear the Brown Scapular after proper enrolment.

When one is enrolled in the Scapular the conferral with the scapular by a Priest indicates a special devotion and consecration to Mary. I would be very foolish to omit that fact that no one should undertake it who is not spiritual prepared to live in accordance with it.

Enrollment
The promises of salvation and deliverance from Purgatory apply to those who die wearing either the large Scapular of the Carmelite habit, the small Scapular, or the Scapular Medal. Anyone wishing to join the Confraternity must be properly enrolled by a priest who has the faculties to do so. Most priests receive this power with the general faculties they acquire from their diocese. Those who are enrolled remain Confraternity members for life and if anyone should fail to wear the Scapular, even for an extended period, there is no need for a re-enrollment in the Confraternity. Also, new Scapulars need not be blessed if the wearer has already been enrolled. In cases of emergency, during war for instance, soldiers and sailors are officially received into the Confraternity by simply wearing the Scapular and reciting some prayers to Our Lady, such as three Hail Mary’s

There are a few guidelines pertaining to the small scapular itself which should be observed in addition to the enrollment requirements

The Scapular must be made of woven wool
Its color may be any shade between brown and black, but preferably brown
It must be two rectangular shaped pieces of the cloth connected by cord, string, or chain
It must be worn over the shoulder to rest on the front and back of the body
It may be decorated with pictures or designs but this is not necessary

THE SABBATINE PRIVILEGE
Our Lady of Mount Carmel has promised to save those who wear the scapular from the fires of Hell. She will also shorten their stay in Purgatory if they should pass from this world still owing some temporal debt of punishment.
This promise is found in a Bull of Pope John XXII. The Blessed Virgin appeared to him and speaking of those who wear the Brown Scapular said

“I, the Mother of grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting.”

The Blessed Virgin assigned certain conditions which must be fulfilled

WEAR THE BROWN SCAPULAR CONTINUOUSLY
OBSERVE CHASTITY ACCORDING TO ONE’S STATE IN LIFE
RECITE DAILY THE “LITTLE OFFICE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN”
OR, TO OBSERVE THE FASTS OF THE CHURCH TOGETHER WITH ABSTAINING FROM MEAT ON WEDNESDAY & SATURDAY
OR, WITH PERMISSION OF A PRIEST TO SAY FIVE DECADES OF OUR LADY’S MOST HOLY ROSARY
OR, WITH THE PERMISSION OF A PRIEST TO SUBSTITUTE SOME OTHER GOOD WORK.

Pope Benedict XV, the celebrated World War I Pontiff granted 500 days indulgence for devoutly kissing your scapular. :extrahappy:

The Scapular Medal

Early in this century missionaries petitioned Rome to allow a Medal to be used instead of the cloth Scapular. Those who made this request were stationed in tropical regions and had considerable trouble preserving their Scapulars from decaying in the excessive humidity. After careful consideration, Pope Saint Pius X, in 1910, granted permission for the use of a Scapular Medal. It was to have an image of the Sacred Heart on one side and an image of Our Lady on the other and would possess the same promises and indulgences as the Brown Scapular. The Medal’s usage, however, was to be restricted. Saint Pius added explicitly to his consent that for ordinary circumstances, “I desire most vehemently that the cloth Scapulars be worn as heretofore

no the “requirement” if that’s what you want to call it is 3 Hail Mary’s a day. 🙂

I wouldn’t say it’s a sin not to do the prayers, but I think it raises a question of why you wear the scapular medal. Is it just jewelry that looks pretty, or does it have some deeper meaning?

If it’s just jewelry, then why not replace it with a medal that looks nice but doesn’t make any demands on you?

If you’re wearing it as a sign of your devotion to Mary and your wish to follow Jesus as she did, then make the effort to live up to the requirements of the scapular. You may not do it perfectly, but you should at least try.

Well, I can assure you that I don’t wear it because it looks nice. I wear it out of devotion to Mary. And I try to say as many Hail Mary’s as I can per day. I just find it really hard to say the entire 5 decade rosary every day.

TO OBSERVE THE FASTS OF THE CHURCH TOGETHER WITH ABSTAINING FROM MEAT ON WEDNESDAY & SATURDAY
i recently read this, and i struggle with remembering to abstain on Fridays. a friend taught me to put a reminder in my cell phone and that helps. i want to someday include Wednesday and Saturday, but it is tough and i try, but i don’t beat myself up over it if i forget.

i noticed it says, “WITH PERMISSION OF A PRIEST”. i haven’t actually asked one, but i’m pretty sure they’ll say yes. i’ll ask the next time i get a chance, but again i won’t beat myself up over it or think i’m excluded from Our Lady’s promise if i forget…

Actually there is no sin in not doing either of them. They are both simply devotionals and neither is binding under sin. One can live a Christian life and get to heaven without ever having worn the brown scapular or prayed the rosary. Why do we think these things are requirements?

there is no obligation to wear a scapular
if you do wear a scapular there is NO obligation to take part in any of the devotions attached to it
as was explained to OP in another thread recently, there is NO obligation to say the rosary daily or at all

therefore, no sin. don’t make up sins, there is no need, plenty of real sins to worry about without making up more

by the way “I heard somewhere” is not a reliable guide for the spiritual life. Get a spiritual director or consult your confessor on these questions.
