Am I the only one that finds this ridiculous?

I found this recently…and while much of it does seem valid…a lot of it just seems rediculous to me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gothic (or goth) is a very obscure and often dangerous culture that young teenagers are prone to participating in. The gothic culture leads young, susceptible minds into an imagined world of evil, darkness, and violence. Please seek immediate attention through counselling, prayer, and parental guidance to rid your child of Satan’s temptations if five or more of the following are applicable to your child:
-Is suicidal and/or depressed.
-Cuts, burns or partakes in any other method of self-mutilation. (This is a Satanic ritual that uses pain to detract from the light of God and His love. Please seek immediate attention for this at your local mental health center.) If five or more of these apply to your child, please intervene immediately. The gothic culture is dangerous and Satan thrives within it. If any of these problems persist, enlist your child into your local mental health center.
~St. Mary’s Catholic Church
Self-mutilation is done most frequently by grown, adult women. You might be surprised by the fact about self-mutilation, like cutting.
In any case, please know this:
If you cause physical harm to your body in order to deal with overwhelming feelings, know that you have nothing to be ashamed of. It’s likely that you’re keeping yourself alive and maintaining psychological integrity with the only tool you have right now. It’s a crude and ultimately self-destructive tool, but it works; you get relief from the overwhelming pain/fear/anxiety in your life. The prospect of giving it up may be unthinkable, which makes sense; you may not realize that self-harm isn’t the only or even best coping method around.
PLEASE see the Self Injury Discussion board.
A friend of mine whom I was very surprised to learn does this told me about it. I’m sure she’d want to pass the word along about this discussion board which has helped her more times than she can count before she, once again, took any sharp object she could find to intentionally cut herself.
More about self-injury, here. What it is:
mhsanctuary.com/borderline/self_injury/whatis.htm
, and **why people self-injure:**http://www.mhsanctuary.com/borderline/self_injury/why.htm
Why would anyone choose to inflict physical damage on him or herself? There is evidence that self-injurers, when faced with strong emotion or overwhelming situations, choose to harm themselves because it brings them a rapid release from tension and anxiety. These situations cause an increase in physiological arousal, and self-injury quickly drops that level of arousal close to baseline. The self-injurer may feel release,but even if s/he feels guilty or angry afterward, it won’t be an oppressive, pushing, demanding tension-filled feeling like it was before.
More insights into the reasons behind self-injury can be gained from two valuable sources: objective and subjective.
Hope this helps those of you out there who are reading this… and who self-injure. For ANY reason that you may or even may NOT be aware of.
**This is NOT a sin… you’re HURTING!! and God loves you more than you can even imagine… or hope!!!
❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Me? I’m praying for you!! **
I always wonder why people bring up historical goths in discussions about the stereotype of goth…it makes little sense to me. They’re totaly different things.
I agree too, I just can’t understand why people of this stereotype proudly call themselves, “Goths”? I prefer the historical Goths to the modern ones…
As a teenager, most of these things apply to me (sleeping all the time, boredom, never coming out of my room, lots of computer time, piercings/tatoos, black nail polish, band shirts etc). If parents are evaluating their teens like that seriously, then even the best kids are in trouble. I’m a straight A, born again Christian, well behaved teen (if I do say so myself!:whistle: ). I agree-quite stupid…
VeronicaAnne-thanks for the info/links on cutting. Most adults don’t realize what a huge problem it is. Most people in my class cut themselves or have done so in the past. I’ll be praying too! <3
Huh. When I was a teenager I dressed in as much black as I could get away with (including black nail polish), listened to what is commonly known as “death metal”, holed myself up in my room for hours to listen to the abovementioned music, preferred to hang out with friends without my parents present (what teenager wants their parents around?), watched cable (still do- isn’t EWTN a cable station?), was interested in sex although not actually having sex, fought with my parents, ate Count Chocula, at times ate very little (esp. after seeing the latest supermodel photo spread), and stayed up late at night quite frequently. And I still spend too much time on the internet (although in all fairness, no one had internet when I was 13- we tied up the phone lines instead).
Was I a goth and didn’t even know it? Gosh. I was under the impression that I was a normal teenager and was attempting to be rebellious in my own pathetic and completely legal way. I turned out okay. I didn’t drink, smoke, do drugs, have sex, or fail any of my classes. 😃
(To answer the original question, no you’re not the only one who thinks this is ridiculous.)
Always nice to get such a large response 🙂
I should get a pin that says “I’m a catholic Goth”, even though I’m not a goth…
-Frequently wears black clothing.
(I have very pale skin and dark blonde hair. Most other colours make me look like a sick lizard.)
-Wears any odd, silver jewelry or symbols. Some of these include: reversed crosses, pentagrams, pentacles, ankhs or various other Satanic worshipping symbols.
(I wear a silver crucifix and a plain ring)
Associates with other people that dress, act or speak Accentrically.
(So my friends and I see nothing wrong with dressing up oddly and going downtown. It’s for the humour value. I cite one such instance… I was dressed as a WWI nurse, another friend in camouflage, and the third in a tan trenchcoat and an orange and red Cat in the Hat hat)
-Drinks alcohol.
(Sure. In Mass.)
-Demands an unusual amount of privacy.
(I wouldn’t call it unusual. I have some mental health issues, one of which is getting frightened when accosted by other people.)
-Requests time alone and quietness. (This is so that your chid may speak to evil sprits through meditation.)
(I request time alone and quietness while PRAYING.)
.
-Uses the internet excessively and frequently makes time for the computer.
(I often have to for school.)
That’s seven… and I’m actually a reasonably normal person.
Okay, I think I got it all covered.
After clearing my cupboard of Count Chocula cereal, Underwood deviled ham, and promising never to attend parties at which deviled eggs will be served, what else can I do to protect myself and my children?
While I’m not a youngin, and therefore many things in the list don’t apply, I’ll weigh in:
Let’s see, I wear black, listen to metal music (I actually enjoy Manson’s Antichrist Superstar album, it’s very well put together musically IMO), I have tattoos (one very nice one of an Armenian Cross), I work nights and live nocturnally on my days off, I read horror novels for entertainment (Lovecraft is one of my favorites), enjoy video games that feature the occult (I recommend Clive Barker’s Undying for a Lovecraftian flavored scare), I’m using the internet RIGHT NOW, drink alcohol, and I spend a lot of time alone.
Of course, I pray alone, and meditate on Scripture quite a bit, so things are a bit different, but I recommend that people not take such lists too seriously.
Have you read Manson’s lyrics? I’m at the opinion that when one has Christ in their lives, they would be very offended (I was horrified at) his lyrics. I’m not trying to judge you, I’m just baffled.
One thing I cannot believe is the ignorance some of you here have taken to this list. Sure, some of the things are just plain silly, but most are definately warning signs. Maybe someone should post a warning list to children about when their parents think such warnings are stupid. Maybe it should read “Children - your parents don’t care when you…”
Yeaaah…
I would post more but I have to run down to the church to find out what shows my teens can watch.
Blood sausages, blood bread, blood pudding, bloody mary…
To Ghosty…I agree with Serenity…if you DO have Christ in your life you DON’T have Manson in your house.
I’m not familiar with Manson except for this…a friend of mine showed me one CD of his that her son had just bought. The CD cover had two tubes coming out from a penis going into two people’s mouths.
Now…the only thing more shocking than that to me was that she asked me if it were me would I let my child keep the CD!!! :eek:
I"m not saying it’s all rediculous - manson IS bad. Very bad. Nothing I would ever listen to.
But dude, this list is a mockery, an insult to the inteligence of every parent. I’m not a parent myself, I’m a 17 year old kid that people call goth. Fact is, if you teach your kids right from wrong, then by the time they’re 16 they’re pretty much capable of making their own choices. Being homeschooled, I don’t really have the ability to factor in the influence of public or even private school…though I do have many friends my parents don’t even know, or know exist of that matter. It’s not important for them to know, because I want to make the right decision for myself - probably more than they want me to.
I just can’t believe Manson is still around, it has been about 10 years since he hit the mainstream.
