Am I the only one who finds the sung version

I’m fairly sure that God’s will doesn’t have much to do with some of the rubbish church music that congregations have had to listen to over the years. Not to mention the often mangled theology of the lyrics. 😛 It takes more than love to write good music: a talent for setting repetitive lyrics appropriately would be an advantage.😃

I am a Music Minister and a composer, so perhaps I am seeing this (or hearing it) from a different point-of-view

I do NOT equate all music and I certainly have my own preferences (Missa Solemnis, for example!). Yet, it has been my experience that as sure as I am not going to like a certain piece of music, someone else will. This is not meant as an excuse to “dumb down” Liturgical Music, either (although any setting for the Divine Mercy Chaplet is not Liturgical Music in the strict sense).

My take is, when we create anything with love, we are entering into a little bit of Creation itself…that is, we are using our God-Given gifts to create something new…that has to be pleasing to God! If it is not, then I am in trouble with MY compositions!😃

It is also worth bearing in mind that ANY setting of the Divine Mercy Chaplet is going to be, by definition, repetitive… It can be done well and beautifully, I think… Are you familiar with Taize? Many examples of Taize (repetitive in nature) can be quite contemplative and beautiful… and in certain setting make for good prayer participaton since songsheets are not necessary…this is the reasoning behind modern Praise & Worship music too (and for the record, i do NOT advocate most of same for Liturgy!)

I was reallly trying to express in my earlier post that i too find certain pieces of music distasteful to my ears…when i come across such a piece in a situation like a musical setting of a prayer I love (like the DMC), I try to zoom in on the text of the prayer and the loving intent of the composer/performer…

I’m not always successful, mind you!

oh, and by God’s will i am referring to a person’s talent and/or love of music… those gifts (such as they are) come from Him and expression of same are a reflection of Him

I agree that exercising one’s God-given talents is, per se, pleasing to God. But one should always be aware that the end product is not always pleasing to the hapless ears of a congregation:p
