My original question was not answered within the 5 days as specified by the AAA forum rules so I suppose it was deleted. I admit it was lengthy and a bit much to take in. So I will make this version short and sweet.

As a teenager I had spent 1 year in RCIA but dropped out. The priest had originally wanted me to spend 2 years. Last year I had an interest in becoming Catholic again so I went to the local priest on my military base and expressed my interest. He decided to not make me under go any further RCIA, though I had neglected to tell him I was originally supposed to do 2 years when I was a teenager.

At the same time I had doubts about the existence of God. Despite all this I went ahead and made my Profession of Faith, was Confirmed and received my first Holy Communion.

In light of all this, was my reception into the church valid and am I truly Catholic? I’ve been sorry about this for some time now and I’ve pondered whether it’s something I should confess or just let go. Another priest told me not to worry about it and just live the faith, but it’s still weighing on my conscience.

Dear Frail,

The Ask an Apologist forum is not under a five-day limit. We get so many questions that we can’t answer all of them. Sometimes we answer questions that have been around for far more than five days.

As to your question: the fact that you had doubt does not mean that you denied the faith. You obviously did not let them keep you from professing the faith shows that they did not get the best of you.

Rest assured; you are a Catholic.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
