It is my understanding that certain offenses incur the penalty of automatic (latae sententiae) excommunication, apostasy being one of them. I was baptized into the Catholic Church as an infant but raised a Protestant from the age of 7 or so until being confirmed on December 21st. However, while in college I became an apostate. So my question is, was I excommunicated at any time? Am I now in full membership in the Catholic Church? Thanks

Canon 1323 provides that the following do **not **incur a sanction: those who are not yet 16, are unaware of a law, are in error about its scope, were forced, acted out of grave fear, or who lacked the use of reason (except culpably, as by drunkenness).

I doubt that at anytime in your life, until recently, the canons of excommunication were of much concern to you. And, given that you were not raised Catholic your level of culpability is greatly diminished.

I assume that you were confirmed this past December. I would also assume that you went to confession and sought confirmation of your own will. Therefore you no longer in any way can be considered an Apostate.

You were not excommunicated. You simply need to make a good confession like anyone else and you are back in full communion with the Church.

Welcome home.
