But the thing is, on the personal level, is that it should rarely even be called “evangelism.” In both Old and New Testament; God prefers to call us something like “My witness.” Try looking up the phrase in the Bible.

I have learned in some of the nursing and counselling I did in the past, that if someone says “it hurts;” then they are right. This is something we too often dismiss too lightly when people bring up questions that are not important to us.
Hi 101,

This is all very nice…thank you for sharing. Now let’s go back to the original two questions.
Regarding the first question; I do need to clarify something from the Catholic viewpoint before I try to answer. Does Catholic teaching include more than just one way to “partake of Christ’s nature?” If no, then would that one way be the “Eucharist?”
Why do you need to know what Catholics believe about this before you can share on this forum what YOU believe about this?
Question 2 is an apologetics strawman. Catholics, and yes, many cults, use this very type of question to get people off of the Bible, and onto “other things.”?"
First, I never viewed apologetics with the same disdain that you do. I think it is good to be able to give reasons for what you believe. I believed that as a SDA and I believe that as a future RC.

Second, 101, please refrain from grouping the RCC with cults. It’s inflamatory and hurtful. Your understanding of RCC teachings is limited as indicated by your question above, so you should not make accusations which you may regret later…
Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good
and good evil,
who put darkness for light
and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet
and sweet for bitter.
21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
and clever in their own sight. (NIV)
You have studied Adventist theology, so you know that we do not teach that “the Bible is the only rule of faith;” but that we teach the Bible is the ultimate rule of faith, and it is the only sufficient rule of faith, meaning that the Bible can stand alone without other sources, as a rule of faith and practice for Christians. To continually ply Protestants with the dagger of “prove the Bible is the ONLY rule of faith,” is to ignore their true teachings, and refuse to to allow the truth to be known. And you guys talk about us misrepresenting your beliefs!!??
Ok…then please provide scriptural answers for what you claim above that I have highlighted in red. Where does the Bible teach that it is the “ultimate rule of faith”, and that the Bible is "the only sufficient rule of faith? And if you cannot provide Biblical authority for what you claim, then, by whose authority do you make those claims.
The truth is, and this is from the Bible; is that God speaks to us through His Word, through His creation, through His Holy Spirit; and sometimes, through direct revelation to His people. You know these things already so why the charades with such questions? The thing that Catholics have utterly failed to do is to show how any of God’s methods of speaking to us could still be called “truth” if it disagrees with God’s Word. You know full well that the Bible talks about two types of “tradition;” and one is condemned, the other blessed. You studied this while at the Adventist schools; and now that you have become a Catholic; you choose to ignore it in favor of “converting” Protestants with such leading questions.
Now you are mixing apples and oranges. We were first talking about the basis for a Christian’s rule of faith. What you describe in the quote above are ways in which God speaks to us…and I agree with you. I would also add that God speaks to us through the aposotles, The Church, scholars and theologians, and regular people throughout the entire history of this world.

The reason I asked for clarification first before answering the question is that too often I am accused of “not understanding” Catholic beliefs, so I was trying to do things the right way by first asking for clarifications. Is that a problem for you?

Look; you are studied enough that you should know there is a difference between “apologetics” and the Biblical admonition to explain the reasons for our faith; and thus be a witness for Christ. But I guess that would technically be another subject.

I cannot however, agree with you about my above comment re “cults;” but not for the reasons that you might want to suppose. I have studied in the community with virtually every denomination there is, as well as with many different cult groups. I did not actually say above that I thought Catholicism was a cult; but I did say that the line of so called “apologetics” that asks such questions as you asked me in your last post, is a favorite tactic of many cult groups. It is designed to get people off of the Bible and on to other things. The very nature of the question shows this clearly, even to a casual observer.

You are misrepresenting what some Protestants really believe about the scriptures; and that is my concern here. You are using that misrepresentation to form other conclusions which you throw out as fodder to the hungry searching hearts looking for truth.

There is a big difference between me saying all this, and me characterizing your entire denomination as a cult. I am speaking more strictly of purported apologetics, designed to trap people, and “defeat” them or trick them. All the major cults do this same tactic, I can name several different groups I have personally studied with who have tried to convince me that “the Bible is not the only source for our rule of faith.” Would you accuse me of being “inflammatory” if I made the same comment to a Mormon regarding their additional “Scripture?” Or any one of a number of much more dangerous groups? Many of them say the exact same things about the Bible. Why don’t you just explain this instead of accusing me of being “inflammatory?” Your penchant for characterizing opposition, instead of explaining it from Scriptures is hard not to notice; even through your kind polite attitude.

The ways that God speaks to us which I summarized above, are “the rule of faith for Christians.” That is the context which I intended it to be.

I also do not take kindly to threats such as
you should not make accusations which you may regret later…
Thanks for the “tip” buddy.

Hi 101,

I’ve asked you two simple questions.

**1. How do you think the Bible tells us to partake of His nature?
  1. Can you prove from the Bible that the Bible is the only rule of faith?**
Why do you need clarifications of Catholic teachings when I’m asking you what YOU believe. There is no trickery, trapping, or pulling you away from the Bible and on to other things. My questions are clearly stated. If you cannot focus on these issues without tangential arguments and inflamatory insinuations, then dialog is impossible.

If you don’t want to answer these questions, just write back and tell me so. We can move on to other topics.

Actually, in your last few posts you have done much more than just ask me two simple questions; and I did already answer your question above about why I am seeking clarifications on a particular aspect of Catholic teaching related to this question.

You like to characterize challenges to your pet theories as “tangential;” or “inflammatory;” well thats fine. But I would like to ask why you have such a big problem with clarifying for me the Catholic teachings regarding partaking of Christ’s nature? Your reactions here show that you do indeed have a problem with it, so why not tell us about it?

Actually, at first, I had only one simple question that I asked you in Post #314 on this thread. That was in response to your comment to me in Post #301, which was a response to my comment in Post #300…all in this thread. You have never answered my question in bold in **Post #314 **of this thread.

It is perfectly alright to say that you do not want to answer that question, that you do not know the answer to that question, or that you need more time to do some research and answer that question. Those are all legitimate answers. Answering questions with questions is not legitimate for a reasonable dialog.

So let’s make this simple and only deal with this one question for now:

1. How do you think the Bible tells us to partake of His nature?

I have absolutely no problem sharing with you how I think, and believe, we partake of Jesus’ nature. I have no problem sharing with you what my understanding of the Catholic Church’s teaching is on how we partake of Jesus’ nature (The RCC teaching on this is all published and available for the public to view and read). No one is hiding anything. And when/if you answer the question I asked back in Post #314, and many other posts since then. I will share my answers with you. That is dialog. I’m hoping we can dialog, but if you do not want to, just tell me and I will respect your choice.

And just so there is no misunderstanding about which question I am asking you to answer at this point in time, please read my next Post.

Hi Protestant101,

Well; I find this whole thing very strange, your reaction is quite a surprise to me - but then I should have known something like this would come, I never once said that I would not answer the question about partaking of Christ’s nature; all I said is that before I do answer, I would like someone to enlighten me on more of the Catholic teachings re same. The implication was obviously there, even a grade three english student could see that I had every intention to answer.

As I explained; I did not want to be seen as spouting off about this Catholic teaching and having people come back at me with “You don’t understand what we believe.” I was actually just trying to be considerate; and make the discussion go smoother, but your reaction here shows that I hit a nerve of some kind; and here you are now setting all your big counter-conditions; this tells me you do have something to hide which you are not willing to say. Why are you so scared to just tell me if Catholics teach more than one way to “partake of Christ’s nature?” That was my question, and then we can move on. Do they teach that the “Eucharist” is the only way to partake of His nature; or do they teach other ways? That’s all I wanted to know and then we can move on? Unless you don’t want to?

I would invite other forum participants to offer me answers on my question about partaking of Christ’s nature. I am very interested to learn more about that. Thanks, in advance for your help. 🙂

Protestant,
What Catholics believe would have no bearing on your answer that I can see, it seems you would believe the same no matter what we believe. The questions was posed to you first regarding your understanding, that is why Patrick is waiting for your answer. IF your only response is to ask a question back, then it is clear that the dialogue is not going to go very far, which is too bad for those watching the thread to learn about either denomination.

Why the games? Why answer a question with a question?

To me this is a perfect example of how when an Adventist gets off their predefined bible texts, they lose the ability or desire to continue dialogue. I do not know if this is the case with you… but it does appear that way.

If you check in the Bible; Jesus often answered people’s questions with a question of His own. I am actually following His example in how to study the Bible with others. I am sorry to disappoint you my friend; but there are no ulterior motives here, there is no “pre-defined Bible text;” (whatever that is), and since I have already stated my reasons above for asking a question to answer a question; then you, as well as Patrick are basically calling me a liar. Nice! Good apologetics skills brother!! Keep up the great work - you are a shining example to all of us!! :dancing:

Anyways; if other forum members could answer my question about what Catholics teach re partaking of Jesus’ divine nature; I would still be interested to carry on with this discussion. To recap; I was wondering if Catholics teach that the Eucharist is the only way to “partake of Christ’s nature?” Do official Catholic teachings say there are other ways to partake of His nature, or not?

Someone came to the door today to with a questionaire and an Amazing Facts Study Guide saying he’ll be back next week to see if the family will be interested in a personal bible study led by someone from his group - his nametag said something like “Mission College of Evangelization”.

I was trying to figure out what denomination he was from but couldn’t really spend much time chatting as the kids were running around and I had dinner on the stove. I figured I could tell from the materials but they don’t really list anything specific.

My guess is Jehovah Witness due to the questions about Jesus’s Second Coming, whether He would appear in my lifetime, and that I would be interested in the study since I’m Catholic.

He said he’ll be back next week, and I don’t really mind since he was pretty nice and polite but I want to be ready with response.

Am I right that this is probably JW materials??
Check it out.
By week 4 of the study group, their prophet will be stockpiling the M4 carbines and announcing that all virgins are given unto him 🙂

I thought this thread was about SDA’s Amazing facts bible study guide? What gives?

SDA do not recognize the authority that Jesus placed here on earth. How about some scriptures that Jesus gave the authority to authenticate which books are God’s inspired word in the bible.

2Peter 1;3
3 4 His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and power.
4
Through these,** he has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divine nature,** after escaping from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire.

7 sacraments instituted by Jesus Christ. Why 7 because you dont need any more than 7, for 7 completes the series from the divine in creation.

Sacraments is an outward sign instituted by Jesus Christ to part Grace to the children of God. If you dont believe Jesus, then how are you going to believe in his authority, and his body on earth, the Catholic church. Below I leave with a few quotes from Jesus to see if you truly believe Him, with your explanation of 2Peter 1:4

I hope you dont waste anyone’s time by giving your rebuttle to this divine knowledge, but give your new age representation of partakers of the divine nature, from an SDA belief.

P.S here is a few more scriptures in sharing in the divine nature.

John 6;54
Whoever eats 19 my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.
55
For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
56
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.
57
Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.
58
This is the bread that came down from heaven.

John 3:5
Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.
6
What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit.
7
Do not be amazed that I told you, ‘You must be born from above.’

Peace

If you had no ulterior motives, then you would have simply answered the question that Patrick asked… Instead you attempt to “control” the conversation by refusing to answer and requiring others to answer your questions. A typical technique, as discussed by Patrick of trying to control the conversation when “witnessing”. Again, showing that a lack of ability to discuss something outside Adventist’s proof texts. Adventists dont have “bible Study” on the divine nature, or sacraments… therefore, Protestant cannot answer the question, without first getting some background/idea what it is we are talking about. Adventist knowledge in this area is VERY surface at best.

I am sure you, protestant, will say I am wrong… however, your repeated refusal to answer a question that was asked of you by Patrick long ago, until you had what you wanted… shows the truth…

This is precisely one of the reasons I joined Catholicism. I feel comfortable discussing any part of scripture without having to know what the other person believes, or what they are talking about, or if they are trying to set me up (martyrs syndrome)… I can just talk… openly to anyone who is willing to do the same. Unfortunately, as you have show, you are not willing to do so. Patrick asked you time, after time, after time again… and you REFUSED to answer… whatever reason you give… the fact is you refused to answer.

I hope you will join us in an open and honest discussion, where if you are asked a question… you dont try to hold the answer hostage until you get what you want… LOL

I love the way ex-Adventist Catholics on this board think they “know” what’s in my mind.

I have obviously lit some kind of fuse here with my question; but if you check my general posting habits here over the last year; I don’t usually ask a question like this first. This time I thought it prudent to do so, and as usual, you have once again joined your cohorts in sending me accolades of displeasure and characterizations that could only come from someone who knows me well. I am guessing that it’s because I didn’t fall into the “Catholic apologetics” net.

I have also said time and again with this particular issue that I am most willing to reply to Patrick’s question, if you or he or any of the other exAdventists want to use that to say I am “dishonest” then help yourself. I have nothing to offer for such stuff. I am not interested in defending myself against your characterizations; although they do make me wonder how you expect people to believe anything you say when you talk to them like this for ‘REFUSING’ to listen.

101,

You do not need to know what Catholics think about this to give your answer. I also told you that I would share my thoughts with you. But you obviously are not going to answer this question.

If you ever decide to answer, I will then share my thoughts with you. But until then, I’m not going back and forth like this anymore with you. If you want to dialog, let’s dialog.

Until then, take care and God bless you!

SDA2RC,

I believe you have hit the nail on the head. The possibility dawned on me today, that he is not an adult as I assumed, but may be a teenager on here for who knows what reason…but it is obviously not to discuss anything. I think he might be a kid. I have looked at his posts on this thread and other threads in the forum, and he does the same thing. He asks Catholics what they believe, Catholics take the time to provide well thought out scripturally and historically documented responses, and then he picks at their answers never giving his own answers when questioned by others. Everyone reading this forum can easily check that out for themselves. His questions are answered, he criticizes and picks at it, and then asks more questions to criticize and pick at…never providing any answers himself.

If he is an adult, then your analysis above makes the most sense. If he is a kid, then that would more accurately explain his behavior. If he is ever willing to really dialog, then I will, but until then I am no longer going to waste my time going in circles with him.

You all take care and God bless you!!!

SDA2RC,

It is interesting if you go back and look at Post #301 in this thread, that it is Protestant101 who first brings up the topic of partaking in Jesus’ nature.

If you look at the last two quotes in that post under his comment "But what really concerns me here is this:"
  1. My quote there says: “receiving His body, blood, soul, and divinity through the gift of the Lord’s Supper is what makes us fit for heaven

From that statement I assumed that he knew how the Bible tells us to partake of Jesus’ nature…and that is why I asked him the question that I did way back when.

Protestant101 brought up the concept of partaking of His nature, which makes me think he has thought about that before now.

🙂 Dear Protestant 101,

I would like to know what the SDAs teach about the divine nature of Jesus and how you share in it. The rest of the people on this thread have made their Catholic case. So far I don’t see your views. I would really like to know what you believe. Thanks in advance for sharing your faith.
