If you want to sing it in a Catholic Church, it needs to reflect Catholic doctrine.
Yes we are all wretches whether we want to admit it or not…

And yes the original lyrics should be sung in a catholic church, and loud enough to overpower the fake christians that think they will go to heaven because of their affiliation with the catholic church…

God’s word overrules “Catholic Doctrine” which was written by MAN…so true catholic christians sing loud and proud that you are a wretch and now you’re saved!
 
Well I agree with Karl that it implies a once saved, always saved theology which is contrary to Catholicism.

I know there is a lot of sentiment attached to the hymn and it’s hard to attend a funeral where it is not played, often with bagpipes. Maybe if just the music were played without the words, it would be acceptable.
I’ve always maintained that the only way to hear Amazing Grace (and Danny Boy) is played by a piper walking away, quickly, down the opposite side of the hill at the bottom of which you’re standing.😃
