I have a really amazing story to tell you and the only person I can attribute it to is God because He was definitely behind this.
Today is the start of the 40 Days for life campaign, a time where we pray and fast for an end to abortion in the US (40 for the days Jesus was in the desert, the years Moses was in the wilderness, etc.) Last night, I went to the kick-off where Pastor Luke Robinson, Fr. Dennis from Priests for Life and Norma McCorvey (the original Roe from Roe v. Wade) were speaking. They were talking about how the blood of these children was crying from the ground as Abel’s did when Cain murdered him and that’s when it all started. It was as if I could hear the blood, not only of these unborn children, but also of the innocent children all over the world who are persecuted, like in Darfur or in the honor crimes against women in the Middle East (many of whom are also children) or any children in countries torn by war. I could also feel the presence of all the great ones who’ve gone before us and fought for justice, like Dr. Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, St. Francis of Assisi, and then I felt that God said to me, “Heal my children.” I’m studying premed and I could not help but feel that He was letting me know why I wanted to be a doctor so badly. Not only that, but I realized something even greater.
Abortion is a huge problem, but it really is a symptom of a much greater problem affecting humankind, selfishness. Because so many people forget God and choose to go their own ways, they forget about their fellow man too. That’s why so many women and children all over are so defenseless and left vulnerable. Instead of coming together against evil, we are against one another as enemies, because we view others as preventing our own personal happiness with their needs. That’s why horrible things like honor crimes, abortion, ethnic cleansing, racism, etc. exist in our world, because Satan is very clever and convinces us to think this way. That’s also why prayer and fasting is so important, because we forget about ourselves in order to think of God and through loving God, we can love others more fully and break down our own selfishness. And that’s how we can truly change the world, by changing ourselves.
We sang the Divine Mercy Chaplet in front of a closed Planned Parenthood last night and I could not help but marvel at the fact that I end up praying this chaplet at places of death (when I visited a Nazi concentration camp in Germany, I prayed this prayer and had an amazing experience there too but that’s another story). I then realized that without the mercy of our Savior, that’s exactly what would happen, we would die. But through His mercy, He gave us life, not only temporal life, but eternal life as well. He loves us so much and wants us to love each other through Him. I then realized that through falling in love with God, we do change ourselves, which enables us to change the world. So really, falling in love can set the world on fire.
