Alternatively they could have quietly disposed of them instead of ticking off the people who put them there and burning all the bridges built.

But hey, who need inroads?

The Church does not need an inroad to paganism. The Church has the Truth and should be creating a path to lead these people away from their pagan idols.
You can’t convert people who don’t want to talk to you.
Unless you use the sword. Which is where this militant ‘toss all idols in the garbage’ comes from.

“This militant toss all idols in the garbage “ as you put it, comes from Scripture. Let’s not pretend that the Church didn’t know how to evangelize before the Amazon synod.

I’m glad these idols were tossed into the river. Amen!!!

We don’t live in the convert by the sword era anymore.
If you want to use those tactics you are going to find yourself with no one too convert.

I doubt this will reflect well on traditionalists, unfortunately.

What was the Vatican expecting? Didn’t the explanation for that idol go from “It’s Our Lady of the Amazon” to “It’s Life”? Did they expect the traditionalists to simply sit back and let people worship these idols in the Vatican? Isn’t it a bit of a double standard for traditionalists to have such trouble with getting the EF Mass celebrated in their diocese, but pagans can be applauded as they worship their idols?

I don’t disagree. I’m only noting that synod fans will no doubt characterize this action poorly and blame traditionalists for creating division, regardless of the truth.

They’ve been characterizing traditionalists as such before the Synod even began. There will be no pleasing them outside of locking into step. A lose-lose situation in that sense.

If traditionalists will be labeled as divisive whether they mutter or taking action, there doesn’t seem to be a reason against taking action.

Are you serious?!?! Who’s converting by the sword? The Church isn’t forcing the Amazonians to convert, we simply don’t want pagan idolatry erected in our churches.

If you’re suggesting the only way to convert is to allow idolatry and paganism to be mixed into the faith, then you can keep that form of evangelization.

Unfortunately you’re probably right. But I welcome that debate any day and I would gladly defend throwing these idols into the river, rather then having to explain why they were allowed to remain in place.

That’s not brave, that’s obtuse and disrespectful. They were not idols and this story is really becoming a showcase of the hysteria toward Pope Francis from a certain fringe of US Catholics.

You seem to have a reading comprehension issue.
I said if you use tactics FROM the era of convert by the sword.

Example: Throwing people out of communities, tearing down idols ect.

You don’t have to literately convert by the sword to also include those brutal social tactics. I’m just pointing out where they are from.

No, I’m saying that not 100% of the world functions as we “in the west” do. South America is still very primitive. If you want dialog you need to be sensitive to that fact. If you treat them like idolitors they will retreat.

Then what?

That was two thousand years ago. Even then Paul was chastised many times in his early years to not be all fire and brimstone and to preach the love of Christ.
