I doubt this will reflect well on traditionalists, unfortunately.
What was the Vatican expecting? Didn’t the explanation for that idol go from “It’s Our Lady of the Amazon” to “It’s Life”? Did they expect the traditionalists to simply sit back and let people worship these idols in the Vatican? Isn’t it a bit of a double standard for traditionalists to have such trouble with getting the EF Mass celebrated in their diocese, but pagans can be applauded as they worship their idols?
I don’t disagree. I’m only noting that synod fans will no doubt characterize this action poorly and blame traditionalists for creating division, regardless of the truth.
hey @gracepoole does it look like 1 single guy stole the image of Our Lady of the Amazon and decided to throw it in the river?? Do you see people here praising the act of a single vigilante stealing from inside a church??

Did you notice the anger when the guy throws them into the water?? (And doesn’t he think authorities will fish the images out from the water should they decide on it??)

Well, in any case I explained plenty of what was to be explained. This false “zeal” on part of the perpetrator is of pure anger and he can’t say in this instance that the icons or any pagans caused him any damage.

(What will happen is a continued, and heightened, polemic. I wouldn’t be surprised if the perpetrator made a living of polemic mongering on the internet.)

What’s with the attitude toward me? 🤨

Its in acts after he leaves Damascus.

Have done and Revelation isn’t about what most people think it’s about. The general consensus for those with a doctorate degree is most of Rev is about the persecution of the church and less about the end times.

I am surprised that so many “traditional” Catholics including CAF members in this thread are celebrating a theft.

Not surprised, however, that so many “traditional” Catholics think that they know better than the Pope. Such has always been the case.

Nothing. I just wanted to comment on this newest turn of events. And since you had been paying attention the other threads on the synod, and we did interact there, and so far you seem to be the most reasonable poster on this thread, I decided to address the reply to you. That’s it, nothing personal I assure you…

There isn’t any “Our Lady of Amazonian” and even if there was those statues surely doesn’t represent Mary. The anger is well justified. Jesus was angry when destroyed marchant tables in the temple. And that was much less than literally idols.

We don’t think we know better than the Pope. He thinks he knows better than us. You know, the people he’s supposed to be leading! With all due respect to the Holy Father, we’re not small children. In faith, maybe, but we’re smarter than he thinks. Traditionalists aren’t the rigid holier-than-thou pharisees he makes us out to be. I wish he would just learn how to take some advice himself from someone he DOESN’T agree with.

The prominence of this idol and how it is being revered at this synod is very reminiscent of the divine maternity idol in Fr. Benson’s “Lord of the World.”

You know, this gives me courage. I wondered what I would do if anything similar ever turned up in my church. It’s quite a traditional church at the moment but you never know in the future. I hope I will have the courage to do likewise

Yes exactly. I suggested people read that book if they haven’t

I’m on to my, oh I think, 500th reading…

CAn someone explain what actually happened? I saw a 4 minute video. It looks like an individual took some wooden statutes (purportedly idols) from the Amazon(?) out of a church and threw them in a body of water.
  1. Where was this?
  2. Is that actually the Tiber?
  3. Is this corroborated? In other words, there was one person in an empty church. How do I know that the idols weren’t planted there for the purposes of the video?
Overall–first of all, I wholeheartedly disagree with the “kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out” attitude that’s pervading the thread. Second of all, idols have no place in a Catholic church unless there’s some really good explanation as to why they’re there.

I have always had the opinion that you should treat others like you would want to be treated. What would our reaction be if someone grabbed a statue of Christ or Mary and threw down into a river to get rid of them…

Not very highly, save it’s for an important cause like feeding someone’s family or removal of idols from a church. It’s the same way I feel about vandalism and destruction of property, unless it’s St. Boniface. (Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Was the statue of Mary or Christ inside of a pagan temple?

“And he took away the effeminate out of the land, and he removed all the filth of the idols, which his fathers had made.” 1 Kings 15:12 (3 Kings 15:12 in Vulgate)
