People deep in the Amazon tribes are very familiar with nakedness.
They’re also very familiar with infanticide. Namely, those with a disability, twins, and the children of single mothers, all of whom are considered to be a bad omen. Are we doing to adopt this next?

Our Lady is depicted naked in our city Cathedral…

The title is…

Here a people of godly race are born for heaven; the Spirit gives them life in the fertile waters. The Church-Mother, in these waves, bears her children like virginal fruit she has conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Is it respectful to create an image of the Blessed Vrgin Mary as naked? Common logic says no, any new church that does it is wrong. Here is the question we should ask would we want our eartly mother to be depicted as naked? So why would we do it to our adoptive mother and Mother of our Lord?
I absolutely agree it is terribly wrong to even think of painting an image of Our Blessed Mother as naked.

In all charity to @Emeraldlady I am truly convinced that the image she posted is not the Blessed Mother. I hope no one is telling her that it is but I believe it is an image of man coming up out of the waters of baptism, representing new life in Christ.

The wording she stated that is the title of the image are almost identical to the words Pope Sixtus III inscribed into the baptistry at St. John’s Lateran Basilica in Rome as his catechesis on baptism.

Here is born a people of noble race, destined for Heaven,
whom the Spirit brings forth in the waters he has made fruitful.
Mother Church conceives her offspring by the breath of God,
and bears them virginally in this water.

.
I had a discussion with a Protestant recently about Our Lady’s significance in Catholicism. They only conceive of her as the lady who gave birth to Jesus and only significant to that end.

For us Catholics, she is the new Eve, the arc of the Covenant, she is the mother of God no less, and the Church, she is our mother, she is the lady of Revelation. “Virgin Mary, all nature is blessed by you” - St Anslem

The image in the Cathedral is as much a representation of the Holy Motherhood as the pregnant woman of Amazonia.

Absolutely. 😀 She is awesome!!!

We will just have to agree to disagree on that one because even the Vatican said those idols were NOT the Blessed Mother and it is apparent the image on the wall is not the Blessed Mother.

God bless 🙂

Yes, most cultures do understand or are familiar with nakedness but we still should not portray our Blessed Mother in that way.
If a cultures traditional understanding and experience of sacred motherhood has been a valuable part of tribal culture and spiritual good, why can’t the Blessed Mother be seen in that? It takes time for a peoples faith to develop to maturity. If we go around imposing cultural norms that are only meaningful to us, onto someone else, how are they expected to relate in their spirit?

From Nostra Aetate

2. From ancient times down to the present, there is found among various peoples a certain perception of that hidden power which hovers over the course of things and over the events of human history; at times some indeed have come to the recognition of a Supreme Being, or even of a Father. This perception and recognition penetrates their lives with a profound religious sense…

The Church, therefore, exhorts her sons, that through dialogue and collaboration with the followers of other religions, carried out with prudence and love and in witness to the Christian faith and life, they recognize, preserve and promote the good things, spiritual and moral, as well as the socio-cultural values found among these men.

The Vatican has said those idols are not images of the Blessed Mother!

We need to have respect for her and know that she would never appear or want to be represented that way and I am sure the Church and the Holy Spirit would never allow it.

I can just imagine what the knights of the past would think if someone said there is a naked painting of your queen somewhere. They would step up to her defense very quickly and destroy it.

So if “a culture’s traditional understanding” and what “has been a valuable pat of tribal culture” are the factors to determine whether Catholicism should adjust to said culture, why aren’t we adopting their Infanticide? Why only their Maternal Nakedness tradition? Why this a-la-carte adoption of their culture?

Who are we to say that avoiding omens isn’t “spiritual and moral”? That’s the purpose of their infanticide. I thought we weren’t going to judge them?

Wait a minute. Are you thinking that what’s happening is that we are all going to adopt these other cultural things?

My understanding is that this is a process of listening to the spiritual experience of the Amazons in order to understand what is good and true there that can be transformed by the Gospel?

No wonder so many of you are hysterical about it. You have the wrong end of the stick totally.

Too many people are talking, talking, talking about things they have no knowledge or experience of and no interest in the evangelisation of already spiritually aware souls.

Yes, and who is to say what is “good and true” from their culture? Why is adopting Naked Motherhood “good and true” but adopting Infanticide not?

Ad hominem attacks just weaken your argument…

Evangelization is one thing, adopting spiritual practices is a whole different thing. The Church is already losing people in the Amazon to protestant evangelicals by large numbers
