Ambivalent about the TLM

Sorry to jump into this thread, but I was a child when Vat II happened and then we stopped attending. I seem to recall that the priest had his back to us a lot, when I was a child, but other than “my fault, my fault, my most grievous fault,” I don’t remember very much about the Mass (except getting PINCHED by my mother if sis and me made any fuss). 😃

When I go to the TLM, are there ANY responses from the congregation? Or is the whole thing done by the priest with his back turned to us? If I go, I want to be prepared for what happens.

If there is no participation by the congregation, what do people do instead? Kneel and pray the rosary? Follow along in Latin?

And is there any music at all? Totally silent? Or perhaps chant? I guess that would depend on the parish and what talent they have available…

Sorry for the questions, and I really appreciate your help.
There are tons of videos on Youtube on low masses, and sung masses.

You can get a pretty good idea of what to expect. I certainly did before I attended my first mass.

I am not proud of the fact that these things I mentioned bother me. At all.
I think it’s okay when we go to Mass to recoil at those things antithetical to worship and reverence for our Lord and our God. I also think its okay to write a note to your Pastor or join a worship committee. Or go find another Parish.

I also think it’s okay to use the “ignore” button on a forum.

Where is the ignore button?

No, it’s not. The time you spend “recoiling” is time you should be spending productively. Odd things will pop-up that will divert our attention but things we dislike that happen each week should not be allowed to become our focus.

…Second point is just a cautionary one on posting dress codes, etc. Though I do think people should be quiet before/after Mass (in the church body at least) and dress appropriately, you have to be very tactful on how you get people to follow these rules. You start scolding people, and embarrassing people for wearing sweats to church, they just stop coming, and so does their money to the collection. Again, I’m not saying don’t try to change this culture, but you have to be very tactful in doing so.
Tact and diplomacy always need to be maintained. To be quite honest my personal experiences with priests in this area seem to be either complete apathy (much like my current pastor) or angry behavior which is just ignored.

There is a big difference between odd things that pop up, like a baby or child crying, and ongoing, widespread disrespect for the Blessed Sacrament.

Of course and it it’s what you said, “ongoing”, then one needs to learn to deal with it in a way other than “recoiling.”

I agree. I can also deal with it by leaving, which is the most mature choice really.
