I have a CD of Ambrosian Chant which is quite lovely. I see it still available through independent sellers, which is where I got it, at a low price.

The Roman Rite is the most common liturgical Rite celebrated in the Latin Church but it isn’t the only Rite of the Latin/Roman Catholic Church. The Mozarabic and Bragan Rites of the West are still in limited use. And several Catholic Orders have their Rites in limited use. I know the Dominicans have a very special annual celebration of the Dominican Rite Mass in their Blessed Sacrament parish in Seattle.

Yep. I have watched several of the videos on the Dominican Rite in the past and enjoyed them greatly. I have not seen either of the Mozarabic or the Bragan Rites as of yet.

I came across it when I went to High Mass at Milan Cathedral - the home of the Ambrosian Rite. (High? The celebrants included the Cardinal Archbishop and four other bishops). Even in Milan, they use the OF for all other Masses.

However, the Ambrosian OF is different from the Roman OF.

Yes, and it differs markedly from the true, traditional Ambrosian Rite. Tettamanzi was notorious for allowing the traditional only as an “indult” with tight restrictions, and among those restrictions was that it was forbidden in the Duomo and, AFAIK, even in the Basilica San Ambrogio!. It remains to be seen how the new Archbishop-Capo Rito will approach the matter.

There needs to be a SP: Editio Ambrosianus!
There was significant discussion when SP came out regarding whether it applied to other rites, such as Ambrosian, Mozarabic, Dominican, etc…

As far as I can tell, the general consensus is that, out of either oversight or respect for others’ authority, it does not. However, priests of those rites wishing to use those older forms would likely get a very favorable hearing from the Vatican if they ran into trouble with their bishops.

Perhaps with some, but I find it very unlikely for the rites which are related to Religious Orders such as the Dominican rite which you listed above. First of all, I cannot see any friar going to the Pope to complain that the successor to Saint Dominic won’t let him celebrate the mass he wants. Second, even if he did, it would be such a gross violation of obedience that I cannot imagine the Holy Father upholding such a complaint.

Regarding the other rites however, I would like to see greater use of them as desired by the faithful. I am glad to see the Church holding on to her rich liturgical tradition.

Peace,

Yes, that’s precisely the kind of situation I was envisioning when I wrote “respect for others’ authority.” I’m guessing that out of respect for the authority of the Generals/Superiors/Abbots of religious priests, SP was not made to apply to their rites.

Thankfully for the Dominicans, it seems that at least a few places permit the traditional Dominican rite!
