What does OF and EF mean?

EF = Extraordinary Form (commonly called Latin Mass)

OF = Ordinary Form (typically used to refer to the English Mass on CAF, although it too can be said in Latin. Or in Spanish, French, etc)

While this claim is well intended, it needs clarification.

To make accurate the statement that only an ordained member of the Catholic clergy (Bishop, Priest, Deacon) may proclaim and preach the Gospel, it needs to be made clear that this is true as part of the liturgy.

What was overlooked, and is important for all to realize, is that everyone of us are called to proclaim and preach the Good News of the Gospel.

The problem with the incomplete claim is that it impedes the spread of the Gospel message where there are not members of the Holy Orders present. There are many foreign (and domestic) Catholic missionaries who do not always have access to a priest or deacon. That does not mean the missionaries are relieved (or prohibited) of exercising their Christian responsibility bestowed on them by Baptism.

As a former seafarer, there were many times a priest was not available aboard ship to celebrate Mass on Sundays. However, that did not prevent Catholic sailors from gathering in community to give praise and thanks to God, and to proclaim the Gospel and preach the Good News.

There are places in the world today, and historically, where because of political and religious persecution, Catholics had to meet secretly, and had no access to the Mass or a priest. Yet they shared (preaching and proclaiming) the gospel amongst themselves and kept their faith alive and active.

Granted, the preaching in question is theologically unsound, but even so, such preaching is not in a liturgical setting, as a Protestant fundamentalist “worship service” is not a liturgical setting.

The bigger issue is that Catholics can and should proclaim and preach the gospel at every opportunity, outside the liturgical setting.
