All of a sudden, I bet numbers would no longer be important.

BTW, we’re still waiting for TFP critics to provide one fact in which TFP works and actions have contradicted or disobeyed Catholic doctrine.

How about breaking Canon law 219? Substituted the name of Plinio for Jesus in the Hail Mary? Forced vocations on little boys (see the most recent edition of Crusader for more info)?

This debate does not have to become so vitriolic, does it? I have no respect for former ‘Father’ Leonardo Boff as he left the priesthood and married outside the Church. While a priest, he espoused dissident theology and renounced orthodox teaching. What I find reprehensible, however, is the total lack of respect for priests of the caliber of Father Robert Levis. He suffered much over the past 59 years of priesthood to defend Holy Mother Church.

Be that as it may, I would respectfully ask that this discussion be CIVIL. I belong to Opus Dei and constantly have to defend it against allegations of being a cult and of financial improprieties. Likewise, TFP and America Needs Fatima has similar enemies who make similar claims. The American TFP, while an offshoot of the Brazilian TFP, is nevertheless INDEPENDENT and autonomous. Pope John Paul II met with some opposition from the Brazilian bishops in 1985, not only for their support of Boff and liberation theology, but their growing involvement in politics.

Here in the USA, my experience of TFP has only been positive. They come to Novus Ordo Masses and are reverent at all times. Like Opus Dei, the Legionnaires of Christ, and other traditional or conservative groups, TFP is often attacked for being a ‘cult’ or that they are too far to the right. Yet, they are NOT excommunicated nor are they under interdict nor are they under any canonical censure or penalty.

The Eighth Commandment obliges us to be morally certain and have credible evidence before we make any allegations which would harm someone’s reputation. The only concrete evidence I find is the good work they do defending the unborn and protesting blasphemy.

Check post #37. Shoshana thought someone quoted Fr. Levis as saying he “couldn’t endorse TFP” period. And then a few lines down saying it is a great organization. That is what she didn’t understand. She thought he was contradicting himself. No one is attacking Fr. Levis

Catholic Answers recently contacted the Diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, for an update on the status of Tradition, Family, and Property (the organization that sponsors America Needs Fatima), and was told that this group – their national headquarters is located in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania – has a good relationship with the diocese. To the knowledge of the person we spoke with, the diocese has not received negative reports about their activities. We also were told that once a year the Bishop of Harrisburg grants TFP permission to use a local parish for the celebration of the traditional Latin Mass. The spokesperson added that the presider is a Maronite priest, who is in good standing with the Diocese of Brooklyn.
