American Catholics: How are you spending this day of penance? (Jan 22)

In all the dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life. The Mass “For Peace and Justice” (no. 22 of the “Masses for Various Needs”) should be celebrated with violet vestments as an appropriate liturgical observance for this day.

I am fasting from 8pm tonight until 8pm tomorrow night, as an act of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. Tomorrow morning after daily Mass I will pray a Divine Mercy Chaplet in reparation for the innocents murdered by abortion. Tomorrow around noon, instead of eating lunch, I will pray a Rosary imploring mercy for those who perform, commit, or facilitate abortions. Tomorrow evening, at the Finding Our Way group’s evening prayer, we will praying intentions for an end to abortion.

Remember, it is not only the unborn for whom you should pray, but also those who are born into and have been sullied by this culture of death: pray for those who have sinned, that they may receive true conversion of heart and true repentance.

What will you do for this national day of penance?
 
I will be fasting from 7pm tonight until at least 7pm tomorrow night. And I will try my best to make it to Mass tomorrow. I would like to make it to the Respect Life Mass at the Cathedral with the bishop but if I can’t make it there I may be able to make it to another parish.

And I will decide on the rest tomorrow.

I wasn’t aware that it is supposed to be a day of penance. No mention in my Church newsletter.

Being a CFP member, I fast 6 days a week and abstain on 4 anyhow… Not to be “Holier then thou”, but that is just the way things have sort of turned out. AND my fasting program has been cleared with both my Physician and Spiritual Director. I would not do it without their full approval:nope:

No. A Private Group based on the old Franciscan Rule of 1221. No connection to the current Franciscan Order, which has superceded the Rule of 1221 for Tertiaries.

I Double-checked the Church newsletters. I attended the 5 PM mass Saturday Evening at SS Peter and Paul. No mention whatsoever of 22 January as a day of penance. I also attended the 4:15 PM mass Sunday afternoon at St. Philomena. Again, no mention of 22 January as a day of penance. I wonder if any churches in the Los Angeles Diocese mentioned it?:confused:
 
That’s news to me, too. I go to several different parishes in my area and none of them mentioned it was a day of penance. Of course none of them promote repentance anyway, and this are supposedely the “conservative” churches in our area.
 
I’m fasting today on bread and water. I’ll pray the seven penitential psalms pleading for mercy on our sinful world.
 
No mention here either. That’s disappointing. I’ll have to figure something out.

What are the seven penitential psalms?

I’m abstaining from meat today, I have a very bad cough and cold, so I don’t feel it would be wise to fast while taking cold medicines. Especially considering I don’t get a break from my toddler, and I need all the energy I can find.

Only MHO but I don’t think you should fast if you are not able to. There are other meritorious forms of penance- you can say extra prayers for example or spend time meditating on the Passion or asking for the intercession of the Holy Innocents.
 
Nor here. No mention in our parish bulletin of a “day of penance”. 😦 I hope that caring for my elderly mother might be an acceptable offering though. Along with abortion, euthanasia of the elderly and infirm is another violation of the gift of Life. (I don’t think) as widely spread as abortion, but every bit as hideous a sin before God.

Pray, not only for an end to abortion… but also for an end to euthanasia and abuses of the elderly and infirm. God bless.
 
I don’t feel that I did enough penance today.
I ate less, but did not fast really.
Fasting is extremely difficult for me physically and
because of my workday - it makes me extremely irritable,
hot-tempered, and nauseated if I try to fast while working.

I did offer several special prayers and an extra Rosary
for an end to abortion.
