I got the following info from a Christian friend. It’s a letter from a group called the American Family Association with some troubling news about the culture of death. It’s pretty scarry stuf that Girls Inc. is trying to push as a “good thing”. I think we should join AFA in their e-mail campaign… We may not agree with some of their pushes (e.g. the “Left Behind” stuff). But we can agree here:
Possibly some of you have daughters who play with the American Girl dolls or read their books. You may even be thinking about buying a doll or books for Christmas. Well, it turns out American Girl (owned by Mattel) is partnering with a group called Girls Inc. to sell a bracelet, the “I Can” band, which financially supports Girls Inc.
Seventy cents of every purchase goes to Girls Inc. The band is sold on the American Girl webpage with a large ad and a link to the Girls Inc. webpage. In addition, the webpage says American Girl is giving $50,000 to Girls, Inc.
The problem here is that Girls Inc. has on their webpage a statement saying they particularly support abortion and a girl’s right to abort an unwanted baby. They were quite clear about their support for Roe, so there is no mistake or room for confusion on that count. Additionally, Girls Inc. supports contraceptives for girls.
They also support and offer resources encouraging lesbian and bi-sexual lifestyles, actually offering resources for girls. One of their publications states, “The emergence of a lesbian identity is an ongoing process, rather than an event.”
Of course, American Girl itself is a separate company, unrelated to Girls, Inc. except now by webpage and the seventy cents on every bracelet. I checked out the Girls, Inc. website, and it is exactly as I have told you. Below are some direct links, so that you can see them for yourself.
  • Girls Incorporated supports a woman’s freedom of choice and convenient access to safe, effective methods of contraception
  • Girls and Lesbian, Bisexual, and Questioning Identities
  • Free your mind: The book for gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth and their allies.
  • Girls and Sexual Health (with sexual orientation on page 3)
I hope you will take time to let American Girl know they are making a terrible mistake by supporting the pro-abortion, pro-lesbian organization, Girls Inc.
Please send them an email expressing your disappointment and let American Girl president Ellen Brothers know the company’s decision casts a great shadow over their trustworthiness to put the welfare of girls and children first.

Family advocates warn parents of doll maker’s partnership

Family advocates are warning parents that the popular American Girl doll maker, owned by Mattel, is partnering with a group that supports abortion and lesbianism.

In August, American Girl launched the “I Can” campaign with Girls Inc., urging girls to take a pledge and purchase a special bracelet.

With every purchase of the “I Can” band, 70 cents is given to Girls Inc. in addition to American Girl’s contribution of $50,000.

“Parents need to know that this effort to promote self-esteem among girls is not as innocent as it seems,” said Ann Scheidler, executive director of the Pro-Life Action League. “While Girls Inc. has some good programs, they also support abortion, oppose abstinence-only education for girls and condone lesbianism.”

The American Family Association also has initiated a campaign to warn parents.

On its website, Girls Inc. says it supports a girl’s right to abort an unwanted baby and promotion of contraceptives for girls.

The group also offers resources encouraging lesbian and bisexual lifestyles.

One publications states, “The emergence of a lesbian identity is an ongoing process, rather than an event.”

American Girl -“I can” campaign promotes Roe

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=78387

I am so upset. We have been purchasing “American Girl” products for years. My daughters have quite a few of the American Girl books, dolls and clothing.

They just came out with a new line of Merchandise about a year ago. It is affiliated with a program which promotes “girls rights” They sell an armband, cosmetics, perfume, and other toiletries. It says that a donation from purchase of these products goes to the “I Can” campaign. Part of this campaign is a curriculum for young girls which teaches them abstinance (great right? Yes it would be nice if they left it there) But no, it goes on to say that if they can’t abstain then they are taught about birth control, abortion etc. I called the Offices in DC and New York and sure enough, they say they

Support the Roe V. Wade decision.

Their curriculum is geared toward protecting a girls right to choose

Depending on the local chapter, they have the freedom to promote planned parenthood and abortion clinics.

American Girl products are pricey, but we always felt that it was good to promote chidren’s toys and books that are positive and teach about history. Needless to say, the order I put in last night will be the last, and I will be certain to tell them why, by sending letters to all branches of the company, letting them know that they have lost my family from their list of customers, which includes grandparents, Aunts and uncles and friends.

girlsinc.org/ic/page.php?id=1.2.2

The material presented here wasn’t as detailed as I wanted so I called the offices in both New York and D.C. for confirmation on this.

and here is the link from American Girl for purchasing the “I Can” American girl Bracelet.

Threads like that really need to come over here through the

This note isn’t just to you. We all have Forums that we’re comfortable with, but if Catholic Answers is ever going to make a difference in the debates raging on in the world around us concerning the MORAL ISSUES of our day, we have to group those issues together.

The Culture of Death Subforum was an attempt to do that, so that we would all be in the same chapter of the same book if not on the same page.

Please get this word out to ANYONE posting on MORAL ISSUES, and esp. on those relating to the STRUGGLE BETWEEN the CULTURE OF LIFE and the CULTURE OF DEATH, we need to post those issues in one place so we can make a difference on those issues.

Do you understand what I’m saying and why It’s important?

Blessed are they who defend the Innocent, Michael

Michael, I think the bigger issue is that Catholic Answers IS making a difference, especially on this topic, because the thread above is where it all started. The original poster is the one that got all the other pro-life groups active on this issue. It was she that called Girl Inc to find out their positions etc., and her decision where to post and take action. Yes, it is a universal moral issue, but kudos none the less to Peace_bwu as a mom concerned about her family.

The reason I mentioned it is because it is a very long thread with a lot of background information about agencies, ministries etc that have already been contacted, and about what some of the reponses back from American Girl and Girls Inc has been. I wasn’t saying that it shouldn’t be posted in many places for maximum exposure, but just so people would know that the wheel has been rolling so no need to reinvent it.

I just put about a hundred miles on my car this weekend going to churches and handing out info on this. You would not believe how many people are unaware where their money is going. Even if they aren’t buying the bracelets, where do you think the money for the $50,000 grant comes from?? I went to or faxed 14 churches so far as well as the Christian radio group in our area and the state Right to Life organization. Hopefully word was anounced from many of the pulpits in the area yesterday. I pray that we can make a difference.

I’ve already emailed them about this. They have yet to email me back.

I’d like to say something. This is my first time posting here. First, the I can bracelets are the only thing for sale through AG that supports the Girls Inc. The hygiene products are not associated with Girls Inc. The books have been around for a long time and some are even available at Walmart. Are we going to boycott Walmart too? I say that if you don’t want to support Girls Inc. don’t buy the bracelets. I went to the girls inc website and it took me an hour to find the info on lesbians etc. If you don’t want your daughters going to that sight, block it from their use, like you would any site that was inappropriate. I teach my kids abstinance. I beleive that one day it may be possible that they may decide to engage in sex before marriage ( I pray that they won’t), but lets get real…and if they do, I would prefer that they use some type of birth control so as not to get pregnant, contract an STD etc. American Girl is still safe for girls. I am going to continue to purchase these items for my children. Maybe you should check out what other companies support Girls Inc. You may be surprised. Don’t tell your kids about Girls Inc, block that site on your computer, let them play with the dolls, let them continue to learn the history, don’t take away their wholesome play. What do they have left?

Birth control does not protect against STDs

And its really sad that a harmless object like a bracelet is covering up the true nature of this group. Its shameless, just like Banned Parenthood’s liason with the Girl Scouts and their disgusting “Nobody’s Fool” conference which FORBIDS parents from being there with their chidren…because Banned Parenthood wants to give graphic material to children as young as 9 ( ! ) without the parents knowing.

In what could be the first official boycott of the hugely popular American Girl doll company, the Chicago-based Pro-Life Action League has announced that it will give the doll company two weeks to sever ties with a pro-abortion “sister” organization known as Girls Inc.

YIPEE!!!

I think Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving)… the busiest shopping day of the year… would be an appropriate boycott day!

I will for sure be at a picket at the Chicago store. I hope American Girl will change its policy though. Does anyone know how close American Girl Place is to Holy Name? The thought of having free parking available is tempting. I think pro-lifers are permitted to park in any property of the Archdiocese. HMMMMM - I wonder if this includes the Cardinal’s residence?

Join The Boycott - Sign The Boycott Pledge…

“We regret that American Girl has chosen to sully their wholesome image in order to provide financial support for Girls Inc,” Scheidler said. “But since they have chosen to ignore the pleas of pro-life parents and grandparents, we must urge pro-lifers not to purchase American Girl products as of Tuesday, November 1.”

Scheidler remarked that with the Christmas shopping season coming up, pro-life parents have a ideal opportunity to send a message to American Girl—and corporate American in general—that they will not allow their consumer dollars to support an anti-life, anti-family agenda.

Scheidler invited pro-lifers to join the boycott and to sign the League’s Boycott Pledge.

Scheidler also called attention to an alternative to American Girl dolls, the Life of Faith dolls offered by Mission City Press. The books that accompany these dolls feature stories of girls living out their Christian faith with heroism.
