I just thought I would let you all know my recent experience.

I am an Americal Idol viewer in Seattle. My husband and I were watching The Simpsons, and we saw an ad aired for a competition for American Idol that is being sponsored by Planned Parenthood. I just wrote a rather strongly worded email to the American Idol division of Fox telling them how disgusted I was by their promotion of such an establishment.

I just thought you all might like to know about just who American Idol supports.

If you want to let them know your disappointment, as I have you can email them at askfox@fox.com

I find reality television to be one of the most damaging things to culture in the 21st century anyway.
This just makes it worse.

Why is a good Catholic watching the Simpsons?

Do you a have link to the ad so one can make their own judgement?

Reality TV, staight out of Fahrenheit 451 youtube.com/watch?v=7cQ-yGCyjyM

Take note of the part of the clip of the wife participating with the TV play and the news clip were they are chasing the firemen ‘book’ reader.

Of course it has been reapainted with flowers and “love” but is todays TV more like TV in 1984? with its Newspeak version of truth? youtube.com/watch?v=QF51CqBy81U&feature=related

Things like ‘American Idol’ encourage young children to aspire to shallow fame, and decrease self esteem of teenagers.
It teaches them that only the successful are valuable, and that fame and célèbre are the 2 main goals for everyone.
It saddens me that this trash is so popular.

My priest did a great homily about the awfulness of American Idol. If I want to watch the TV channel for listings, some kind of AI rewind is on. (Not to mention that semi-pornographic series with Flavor Flav, among other things.)

I’ts Fox local tv. What do you expect? They represent the liberals. But I hand it to Fox since they are geniouses in their ways of also catering to the conservatives through their news channel. I love the Simpsons episode that makes fun of them fact and I got to hand it to a sation that is willing to acknowledge what they do and make fun of themselves.

As far as American Idol; what is so wrong with it? It gives people a chance at fame who otherwise might not have it. Ya you got to get lucky but in what aspect of fame do you not either need some massive luck or connections? I haven’t had the time to watch the show in a couple years but the few years I did watch it I found it rather enjoyable since some of them have good voices.

While I admit, the making fun of people in the beginning, though hilarious, got old after the first few seasons.

You know, I didn’t record the ad, and I must have spent a good 2 hours last night hunting a copy down, but I was unsuccessful. I can tell you that they were advertising an “Idol triva” contest where you answer some questions right, and you can win a trip to the finals as an audience member. Then they showed a huge planned parenthood banner and said that this contest was sponsored by Planned Parenthood.

And yes, FOX does air a lot of shows that are horrible. I do not think, however, that just because some of their shows are terrible, they should get away with promoting the horrific mass murder of the unborn. Especially given the influence they have on our youth…(okay, by youth I do mean MY generation…I’m a young 'un) I watch American Idol only at the end, when all the ridicule has stopped and it’s down to a battle of talent. I do have my problems with the show. I hate that it objectifies their women contestants, and I hate that it is more about image than musical ability. I do like seeing the singing though, because as a musician, I enjoy shows like that. I will not be watching it anymore until I hear that they stop their support of the atrocities of PP.

I watch American Idol for it’s entertainment value. I have to assume the people on the show have a desire to use their singing talents to make it big. I can’t assume they are doing it for the wrong reasons. A lot of sucessful people use their talents for good and to help make the world a better place.

If the contestants are doing this for the wrong reason, that is not something I can control. Fox is doing what they do for entertainment value, there are sometimes when constructive criticism turns to rudeness on the show, which I don’t care for, but there is a certain demographic that sort of thing appeals to.

Also, I find that a large majority of the commercials on “network” TV like CBS, NBC, FOX, and ABC are mostly done out of poor taste, especially in primetime. Commercials such as Victoria Secret, or the current hightly rated drama or mystery, soap opera, or even sitcoms with crude humor. It continues to commercials advertising medicine for ED, or the latest contraceptive. Onto commercials that do not remain neutral on moral issues.

At my house, if we don’t want to get offended during commercials we mute the TV or change the channel when commercials come on. I think it would be fitting to explain to the networks and to it’s advertisting underwriters that when commercials come on, we switch the channel because of their offensive content. So they are wasting their money on advertisting.

No where does your post here say that American Idol supports PP, ONLY that PP is sponsoring an event with an American Idol related prize. MASSIVE DIFFERENCE!!!

It is entirely possible to obtain audience tickets and then use them for whatever promotion you wish. You could even do this yourself. Obtain the tickets, then have a raffle or other contest to raise money for your parish and use the tickets as a prize.

AGAIN - your post only shows that PP is using American Idol to have some sort of promotion. NOT that American Idol supports or endorses PP.

SO - until you can provide SOLID evidence that Fox and/or American Idol openly support and endorse PP your comments are not even close to being accurate and require VERY close scrutiny. I hesitate to mention scandal, but if you are not absolutely sure of your accusation, you could very well be accusing a large number of people (at American Idol) of something they are not responsible for and do not deserve.

Whether or not this story is true, American Idol are playing a massive role in the cultural degradation of today.

We don’t agree on everything but I’m with you here.🙂

I’m a pretty conservative fuddy-duddy at 44, and I don’t agree with this. I think that perhaps some of the less talented contestants are taken advantage of for pure entertainment value and that is certainly sad. But to say that fame is shallow is not true - there are those who are famous and who are very well grounded. Decrease self esteem? There have been many contestants over the years who have had amazing self esteem boots by this show, and even some who think they don’t “have it” but learn they really do have talent that they should nuture and pursue.

And how is it bad that “only the successful are valuable, and that fame and célèbre are the 2 main goals for everyone” - it is a CONTEST!!

I’m sorry, but if you enter this contest without a desire to be successful, then you are in the wrong place to be sure.

If we are to go through life not ever saying that someone is better at any given thing than someone else, and that we are all equal and perfect and no one should be successful, famous, or excel at something - what a sad place this will be.

There is nothing morally or spiritually wrong with success or fame - as long as one remains grounded in their Faith and morals. And yes, both can exist at the same time. It may not be an easy road to take, but it can be taken.

American Idol is about wanting fame.

It’s not about conservatism - anyone on this thread knows I’m no conservative!

And talent wise, there’s more talent on the underground music scenes than any manufactured rubbish on the television.

So - do you think that Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson were going to be winning Grammy Awards just singing in their small town bars?

They are hardly manufactured rubbish - they are very talented women. They took the chance, entered a contest, and they won. Why is that rubbish?

And again - what is so wrong with wanting fame? If a person can maintain their moral and spiritual wellbeing - then what is so wrong with fame?

Oh, I hear you.Good points. My daughter’s a very conservative, orthodox Catholic and loves American idol. She and her friends set the evening aside to watch it.
It’s just my personal taste. I can’t stand it or much of anything else on tv. It all seems terribly shallow and sometimes cruel.
And like the more liberal poster from the North of Ireland, I hear better music from small bands locally than anything I hear on tv or specifically, American Idol.
Just my own personal taste & opinion.

Maybe your daughter would be interested in this PP connection. I wrote them saying that we were banning them from the house this season.

What a HORRIBLE and mean thing to accuse her daughter of!!!

Did you even BOTHER to read my comments on that subject?? There is NO evidence to suggest that Fox or American Idol directly support PP - only that PP is having some sort of contest and using tickets as the prize.

DANG.

I think she just meant my daughter might be interested as a conservative Catholic to know if there’s a connection between the two.
