"American Idol" likely to return to broadcast television

Can’t we just let shows end? I don’t watch a lot of current television but I feel like many of these programs are starting to go on forever even if the quality is declining. Many of the older sitcoms I watch had a lifespan of 8-10 seasons at the max, new ones seem to be going on ad nauseum.

Not a big fan of AI but I must admit it was a better alternative to a lot of the sitcoms that filled the same time slot. I assume it will not return in the exact same format, either. (The post-Cowell versions certainly had a different vibe already).

Actually, I think popular TV shows use to go on much longer than they do now. The TV version of Gunsmoke lasted 20 years, from 1955 to 1975. If you count the radio version the entire run was 32 years! (Though I’m not sure I would, Sherriff Dillon is much more cynical, and Miss Kitty much more obviously a “scarlet woman” in the radio show compared to the TV version.)

Not to mention the many daytime “soaps” that went on for decades, though most have hit the bin at this point. The British soap Coronation Street has been running for decades as well, there’s only 1 original cast member still left.

I have noticed though that many of the “new” TV shows these days are actually remakes, such as the Hawaii Five - O and MacGyver remakes. Or are very unoriginal in their premises, such as Hannibal and Gotham or Bates Motel, all can be said to be based on the movies featuring the same characters.

I also find the enduring popularity of Sherlock Holmes in its many incarnations (including House, MD) to be somewhat ironic, as many of the original stories are extremely offensive to modern sensibilities. I assume “The Yellow Face” will never be dramatized.in the US - even though it was likely considered “liberal” at the time. And I can think of a number of stories that involve Holmes making use of ethnic profiling.

I have no issue with a show going for years if the material continues to be well done. I’ve experienced programs where it is clear that the writers have thrown in the towel, or plots begin to get recycled or far fetched and yet the show drags on. I wonder if the television viewing audiences have become less discerning. I recall a program I watched years ago that was clever, I had lost track of it for a few seasons and found an episode recently and the humor had just (in my opinion) dried up and the cast chemistry had gotten robotic. Yet, I checked and the program has another two years left in contract. You bring up a good point with lack of original ideas. This is one of my main gripes with current television/cinema. I want an original idea, not a remake, reboot, TV show based on a film or a film sequel.

The problem is, everything has been done to death in tv, thats how reality tv got its start, it was a new idea. I cannot imagine what the next big thing will be though.

And I believe Ryan will once again host. Kelly Clarkson might be a judge.

There are so many talent shows on TV. I am not sure what ABC will do differently.

I can’t believe Dancing With the Stars is still on. I find that show nauseating. It is so
fake. The judges are way too overdramatic and annoying.

I will give Idol a second chance. At least check it out. I never got into The Voice or
America’s Got Talent.

Perhaps we can view it as a sign of Resurrection. In TV, nothing ever truly dies. There is always opportunity for new life. 😛

As I get older, it is funny to me to see how things cycle through. Something gradually diminishes in popularity, but then once it is off the air for a few years, people get nostalgic and want to see it again.

As long as they don’t bring back Love Boat! 😃

No doubt they will try for a reboot eventually. It was way too popular for them not to try. The market got flooded though when other shows like "The Voice " appeared and cut into their audience base and then like any good thing that runs a long time it just got old. So expect a reboot at some point. Just don’t expect it to work. 🤷

I remember they tried to bring back KNightrider and the 6 million dollar man, among a few others, but none of them lasted very long. Trying to put a modern spin on something old rarely works imo.

Right. But then sometimes it does work. The new Hawaii 5-0 is still on.

😃 That’s funny so long as it doesn’t actually happen. 😛 If that actually happened, it would be scary!
Yes it would! In today’s culture I would hate to think what they would do with Fantasy
Island too! 😃

They did try to revive Fantasy Island some years ago with Malcolm McDowell in the Ricardo Montalban role. It didn’t last beyond a season, if that.

I would be up for a ‘Rockford Files’ revival.

That would be good!

I wouldn’t even mind Perry Mason.

I wish they could make a good western too.

Yes - I can’t even think of a Western on broadcast television. (Not counting HBO’s Westworld.)

last one i can think of was “Hell on Wheels” which was pretty good imo. and then there was ‘Deadwood’ back in the early 2000s, that was OK but raunchy.
