Judie Brown, president of American Life League, released the following statement regarding the Catholic bishops of Atlanta, Charlotte and Charleston’s joint proclamation, Worthy to Receive the Lamb: Catholics in Political Life and the Reception of Holy Communion.

We are overjoyed by the decisive actions the Archbishop of Atlanta and the bishops of Charlotte and Charleston are taking to protect the Holy Eucharist from the sacrilege of allowing Catholic pro-abortion public figures to receive the Sacrament.
Since January 2003, when we first launched our Crusade to encourage bishops to enforce Church law and bar pro-abortion Catholics public figures from Holy Communion, we have stated a simple truth about the Church’s teaching that this document echoes: You Can’t Be Catholic and Pro-Abortion.

There are three main concerns with a Catholic public figure’s open support for abortion. The first is concern for the eternal consequences that exist for the public figure’s soul. The second is concern for the scandal that is caused by misleading the faithful into believing it is acceptable for Catholics to support abortion. The third is concern for the sacrilege that occurs when a known pro-abortion Catholic is allowed to receive Holy Communion.

This proclamation explains these key concerns when it states: ‘Because of the influence that Catholics in public life have on the conduct of our daily lives and on the formation of our nation’s future, we declare that Catholics serving in public life espousing positions contrary to the teaching of the Church on the sanctity and inviolability of human life, especially those running for or elected to public office, are not to be admitted to Holy Communion in any Catholic church within our jurisdictions: the Archdiocese of Atlanta, the Dioceses of Charleston and Charlotte.’

It is our prayer that the rest of the country’s bishops will join these steadfast shepherds of the Church by enforcing Canon 915, which states that persons “who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to communion.”

I keep getting this sense from the media that this is some ground breaking action on the part of these three Bishops. It’s not. There are a dozen other Bishops and Cardinals who have said the same thing over the last year? OR am I missing something.

Br. Rich SFO,

It does not say or imply that it is groundbreaking so I don’t know how you could have gotten that impression. Maybe you were expecting something else? If you lived in the diocese affected as I do you would be praising God and the Bishops. Since you are not doing eigher, I hope that you will pray for an end to abortion.

Have they issued statements to the people of their diocese to “declare that Catholics serving in public life espousing positions contrary to the teaching of the Church on the sanctity and inviolability of human life, especially those running for or elected to public office are not to be admitted to Holy Communion in any Catholic church within our jurisdictions”?

Every Bishop has a duty and obligation as the leader of their flock to publically enforce the code…the issue of “twisted politicans” referring to themselves as “good Catholics” must be addressed in a straightforward and unambigious manner. God bless these forthright Bishops. 👍
