American or Catholic First?

As I read the different comments by previous posters…I was caused to contemplate on the subject. It is a very important issue.

I have to say that my conclusion is: I am a Catholic FIRST!

Here’s why. While I am an American by birth, upbringing, and patriotic by nature who took the Oath to serve and protect the Constitution when I joined the US Army in 1967…I did back then understand that while I took that oath to my country, my first duty was to God.

I understood then and understand now that it is my duty to protect my country…that has protected my religious freedom, and my rights as a free man…however, as one other poster said… “governments change”. Were the government of US to change radically so that it no longer upheld the constitutional right to freedom of religion and other rights. My oath would have been abrogated by the government, and I no longer have any obligation to it. Though I left the Army years ago…I still believe that my oath holds as it is every citizens duty to protect and serve, IMHO.

I would do as many of our forefathers did…emigrate to a country where I could again serve God as a Catholic. God comes before country…as it should be.

My order of priority;

God
Family
Country.

The wording to the question, “are you a Catholic first,” kinda made me wonder if it was the Catholic religion, or faith in Christ, that came first? I’m only a Catholic if Christ wills it. I’m His first and foremost, regardless of what religion he leads me to.

Everyone else seemed to grasp the question. It isn’t complicated. This is a Catholic forum and Catholics converge here with their values.
