America’s culture really has just turned into something nasty. I mean all it really is about these days is sex. You see it everywhere you are, in the media, movies, etc.And really the people I worry about are the children and teens who are targeted with this trash and go though this everyday like me since I am a teen as well. I just hope America will repent itself and go on the right path.

What do you all think of this?

The culture, which is more widely spread than America, gives rise to a false perception of what love really is, therefore so many relationships are based on the wrong premises…and so many marriages fail because really so often there was no genuine love, only mutual attraction, if not in one partner, then in both. Therefore the marriages are built on sand, not on rock

Yes, you are Art321 are both correct about the degradation of the culture. Relationships based on the wrong premises do fail. Sex is mistaken for love. Commitment is taken not to mean “till death do us part,” but rather “as long as love shall last,” which really means, “so long as I have good feelings about you.”

Those kind of relationships are not stable, and so children are born into unstable families which of fall apart, damaging the children in the process. And damaged families make for a damaged society.

But you are both, I am sure, younger than me. And since you seem to understand these things, I have hope for the future.

I thought this was going to be a thread about obama’s turning America into a pure socialist state.

And no, that’s just the media that is preoccupied with sex. My own personal pet theory is because most of these people are really nerds who couldn’t get any sex when growing up and were often laughed at when tried.

Our Lady of America has asked Catholics to live a chaste life and to pray the Rosary.

You can thank us “baby boomers”, the most selfish generation in the history of this once great nation, for turning our culture into a sewer of greed and perversion. While we’re at it, you can throw a little blame at the “greatest generation” who in raising us, endulged our every whim.

Takes a deep breath in relief I am glad this is not yet another Obama-bashing thread 🙂

Now, on America’s sexually-charged culture? I agree. It’s really sick and saddening! As a teen in our culture, I was very naive. I thought a slew of impure thoughts and was under the impression that they were alright as long as I didn’t act on them. Eventually, as a curious teenager, I ended up acting on them, anyway. Every guy I dated eventually wanted something sexual and my caving in was a mix of curiousity and the desire to make the guys happy.

As a – well, decent looking – woman in American society, sexual temptations are everywhere. They’re so easily accessible. 😦 Unfortunately, I caved in to them a few too many times (for most of those, I wanted it, too :o ) and now, I have visuals of erotic situations that I will never be able to forget. I just pray a Hail Mary when they pop into my mind.

Right now, as someone who recently rediscovered the Church, I have no Catholic friends (and only one Christian one, at that!) All my friends are engaging in premarital sex. In our current society, sexual relations are expected in a relationship. With the content of movies and music, it is easy for a young person to mistake lust for love.

I wish we were not so sexually obsessed. It saddens me to think most people I know are not necessarily in a state of grace (necessarily - only God can judge that for sure!) and that even if they DO know better, they are justifying their actions with “yeah, but, we don’t live in the 50’s anymore! EVERYONE’S DOING IT!”

In short dear lady… this culture is completely oversexed. Back in the 1800s people struggled with purity, but sex wasn’t “in your face” 24/7 like it is today. I grew up in the 70s and things are only getting worse as far as I can tell. I can relate to your comment about the imagry being stuck in your head. This has been an issue for me as well. I do my best NOT to have fond memories of the things that I have seen and done in the past, but even that can be a challenge!

Ah, yes. Everybody’s doing it. It’s expected.

The youth are growing up with this atitude. Sad.

I was accused by a 16-year-old of only being courteous to her mother because I was seeking sexual gratification. Why DO they get these ideas? I do not think treating a fellow human being with respect and decency should automatically be suspect.

Oh, I am almost old enough to be the youngster’s mother’s grandfather.

The western world is definetly over-stimulated sexually.

But no one needs to starve, if only they ask the appropriate authorities for help. No one needs to freeze, slavery isn’t allowed, every citizen can vote, regardless of race or gender, and every child can go to school.

On balance, I still think we are the most just, humane civilization to have ever existed, and I’m proud of that.

Doesn’t mean we should stop trying to do better, but we needn’t issue blanket condemnations, either.

Oh man, I can relate, but from the other side –

I treat everyone with kindness and respect. If a stranger approaches me, I will continue conversation as long as I have the time and it initially appears innocent.

This gets some crazy guys thinking I must be romantically or sexually interested. No. I’m just friendly. What happened to genuine kindness without ulterior motives? 😦

On the other hand, Sam Maloney, I agree. This world has many wonderful things to offer which cannot be overlooked… BUT the sexualized nature is sick and saddening indeed.

A huge number of American men have been conditioned by the porn culture that we live in to look for sexual opportunities when speaking with young attractive women. The problem is made worse these days because there are a number of women who are perfectly willing to have sex… often on the first date with a man who will take her to dinner and treat her with “genuine” kindness.

Mainstream women’s magazines usually advise women to “wait” until the third date before having sex… and millions of young women follow that advice. The idea is that if you have sex with him before the third date he will think you are a sl**. Compare and contrast that “advice” with the words of Christ.

Is it any wonder why men have become like mere animals? What’s heartbreaking about this is that it renders love making within her later marriage insignificant.

Every generation is captured by some pervasive thought, a collective ethos that defines it forever. It’s too early to know what that ethos will be for today’s teens. People in their twenties, however, are defined by an extreme, totally inarticulate, absurdly irrational radicalism that will undoubtedly contaminate the thinking of teenagers.

Yes, American culture has really degraded a lot. Back in the 1800s, they couldn’t even sell condoms or other birth control. Now they can. But not just that, you see sexual advertisements even during hours that children are watching!  😦 But it’s not just that either! There is also sex scenes in so many movies and such and Hollywood has truly degraded a lot as well. It is really quite sad.

We must pray for the repentance of many in America and much of the Western world.

Isn’t there a song lyric that goes something like:

“Baby you and me, we are nothing but mammals, so let’s do it like they do on the Discovery Channel”?

The first time I heard it, I thought it was amusing, but now, it sort of sums up what a lot of young (and “mature” as well) people are looking for, instead of a love that is truly fulfilling.

On balance, I still think we are the most just, humane civilization to have ever existed, and I’m proud of that.
There has been much progress in many areas, and yet here in the US, we manage to kill off 20% of the next generation each year, to the tune of one million deliberate deaths per year. That’s not indicative of a humane civilization.

To me, America is a vast complexity. Meaning one can find what they are looking for fairly easily. Yes, when hormones are flowing strong, it seems that is all one sees. When one’s stomach is growling, they seek food; when there is only change left in the pocket, they seek money; when one is lonely, they seeks others. It seems to bring up ones appetite for ???

Can we blame Hollywood for the movies when they are being bought? Can we blame commercials when we buy there merchandise? Can we blame others for believing all the stuff they read or see as being how it is in the real world? Can we blame the one who lives in the safety of their head but does not walk on the ground?

Don’t buy that stuff; see through the commercials to the falsehoods they are promoting; feel some disgust for what is in books and on tv; walk on the ground and use your head for deciphering what is good for your personal sake; follow one’s conscience, and rules one knows to be for one’s good.

There is much more life out here then sex. Of course it doesn’t make the headlines as readily as that kind of stuff… but maturity should help one be able to see that stuff for what it is. Don’t be so gullible. Have a healthy dose of doubt ready at hand… and if one does not know how to answer others, just say flat out NO! Be your own person even if others are not, who wants to be a clone anyway.

What I see in America is different then what you see… it’s a matter of where you look, and what you do. Satan tries to seduce while good simply shines like the sun. One we have to back away from, the other we should walk toward.

And no, that’s just the media that is preoccupied with sex. My own personal pet theory is because most of these people are really nerds who couldn’t get any sex when growing up and were often laughed at when tried.
And you can support your theory because nobody actually pays for tickets to raunchy movies or buys the DVD. Nobody is influenced by racy advertising, so sales don’t change. Nobody buys novels that use cheap sex to titillate readers…

One wonders, how did these aged nerds GET so much power in Hollywood??

IMO, you’re dead wrong. The media is giving the culture what it wants.
