Is it true they’re pro abortion?

If someone asked you if you are interested in supporting the organization… how would you say that you’re not interested, because of the abortion issue?

thanks 🙂

Yes. They are pro-abortion. In fact, one of the founding members who was a Catholic bishop left the organization when they adopted their position on abortion ‘rights’.

I would say, indeed have before said, “while I respect most of the work done by Amnesty International over the years, owing to their taking a position on abortion opposed to my deeply-held religious beliefs and my own beliefs on the applicability of human rights to the unborn, I cannot in good conscience directly support Amnesty International at this time.”

Acknowledges the good work they do accomplish while stating that they do not go far enough and in fact to some degree have softened their commitment to true human rights.

I really don’t see their stance as ‘Pro Abortion’. They are in favor of the decriminalization of abortion in countries with poor access to health care, where the mortality rate for women during childbirth (and infant mortality) is much higher than more advanced countries. According to LifeNews.com,
The United States’ maternal mortality ratio is only 21 deaths per 100,000 live births compared to Burkina Faso’s 300 and Sierra Leone’s 890 deaths per 100,000 births.
I believe the work they do to promote human rights everywhere, and shine the light on violators - is needed, and would be sorely missed if they stopped. So much of what they do is worthy of support. I see a huge difference between AI and Planned Parenthood.

thanks for the info!

I believe that the best solution for mortality rate is improving health care, not adding to the mortality rate through abortion…

If abortion is decriminalized, the most basic human rights of the unborn are taken away. It’s just another way of saying that unborn children are not really human, which is a lie. The solution is to help countries provide better ob/gyn care, not decriminalize abortion. The mortality rate for babies during abortions is 100%. Thanks for reading.

Tom

I would tell them that I dropped my membership when they chose to support abortion.
I would point out that the right to life is necessary for the enjoyment/practice of all of our other human rights.
I would voice my hope that Amnesty International will someday resolve to support for human life and concomitant human rights at every stage of development.

Oh no… I’ve become a donating member of Amnesty International in the past month.

I did ask one of the people I talked to whether the organization “[does] anything to support abortion” (roughly) and I received a response in the negative.

But given this thread, the story looks to be more complicated.

I really wanted to help stop the sort of human rights abuses that AI exposes and combats. But how can I do this as a pro-lifer?

I’m going to have to talk to my priest.

The solution is to improve maternal healthcare, not to call open season on the unborn. Simple things as investing in running water and getting doctors and midwives to wash their hands can do what abortion cannot.

Looking further, it seems they adopted the abortion position in 2007. What’s sad is that the founder, Peter Benenson, was a Catholic convert (if not a perfect one - he was divorced from his first wife, but it says nothing about what the diocesan tribunal thinks about the whole thing, if at all) and that in the 80s it had a Catholic bishop on its board. That two years after Benenson’s death his brainchild would support the suppression of an essential human right is shameful.

That is pro-abortion. I will have nothing to do with them. I do not see why making it legal to kill kids should be a stance made by a group promoting basic rights.

They also call for public health systems to train and equip health care providers to perform abortions.

The policy does not advocate abortion on demand or declare it a human right, but it supports access to abortions in cases of rape, incest, violence or when pregnancy jeopardizes a mother’s life or health. It also opposes criminal sanctions for those who undergo or perform abortions.

Amnesty International refuses to allow pro-life group to participate in human rights event
The University of Buffalo (UB) chapter of Amnesty International refused to allow a pro-life student organization to participate in an annual Human Rights Day Celebration on Tuesday citing the organization’s longstanding “pro-choice… stance.”
Elsewhere Amnesty has called for small steps towards the legalization of abortion. The group submitted a report to the UN Committee on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) calling for the legalization of abortion in Mexico for women who are pregnant as a result of rape or incest.
According to its official position, “Amnesty International believes that where women’s access to safe and legal abortion services and information is restricted, their fundamental human rights may be at grave risk.”
In 2010, Amnesty International was found pressuring the national of Peru in South America to legalize it.

So does AI help a country improve access to better health care in order to lessen the mortality rate for women during childbirth? Decriminalizing abortion is not the answer.
