what other reading do you have when the author has already clarified his thoughts? Nobody is fooled! if Francis just wanted to recall the traditional teachings of the Church, he would have expressed himself differently in AL.

Indeed, the author has clarified his thoughts, yet some still refuse to read his words!

He said himself that AL is not magisterial. He said himself that AL represents his reflections on the synod on the family. He said himself that the conception of Christian marriage must be respected and promoted. He said himself that we must live according to the gospel.

What other choice is there, considering his statements, than to read AL in continuity with church teachings and the gospel?!

Ah yes, living according to the gospels, I know many Protestants who say live according to the gospels, but who agree to divorced their with spouse in case of adultery, because it is written in the Gospels according to them! No one is fooled, once again …

I am of the opinion that those of you who refuse to accept that the teachings of the church are in conformity with the gospels, and those of you who refuse to accept that Pope Francis is orthodox and has not made any changes to the teachings of the church, are the ones who are taking the Protestant viewpoint.

I am reminded of a couple of lines from Cool Hand Luke. (from memory, so might not be exact quotes)

“Some folks you just can’t reach” and

“What we have here is failure to communicate”

I think what we have here are people being what my late first wife called “deliberately obtuse”.

Congregation For The Doctrine Of The Faith

“The doctrine and discipline of the Church in this matter, are amply presented in the post-conciliar period in the Apostolic Exhortation Familiaris Consortio. The Exhortation, among other things, reminds pastors that out of love for the truth they are obliged to discern carefully the different situations and exhorts them to encourage the participation of the divorced and remarried in the various events in the life of the Church. At the same time it confirms and indicates the reasons for the constant and universal practice, “founded on Sacred Scripture, of not admitting the divorced and remarried to Holy Communion”(9). The structure of the Exhortation and the tenor of its words give clearly to understand that this practice, which is presented as binding, cannot be modified because of different situations”

Ok. So I honestly don’t know how we can reconcile AL with the explanation of Familiaris Consortio given by the Congregation For The Doctrine Of The Faith.

There are either possible situations that are exceptions or there are not. The Congregation For The Doctrine Of The Faith clearly states there can not be, and calls it binding and based on Scripture! One of them is wrong!

That is ONE definition of an irregular union not all definitions of an irregular union hence a long discussion on mitigating circumstances such as fear and duress.

Yes, but Pope Francis particularly chose as examples of “acceptable” irregular situations, cases that exclude violence and other abuses.

Except for his discussion of mitigating circumstances in which he discussed other issues that can be taken into consideration by the pastor through discernment.

Again, I refer you back to AL where Pope Francis explains why he believes AL can be read in continuity with FC.
Oh I have no doubt he believes that!
I’ll also point you to the newest set of guidelines from Cardinal Clemente of Lisbon who was once a vocal critic of AL and has now issued guidelines which he believes are in continuity with FC… Unofficial transcript of Lisbon Guidelines: Actualidade Religiosa: Lisbon's document on the reception of chapter VIII of the apostolic exhortation “Amoris Laetitia”
That, I will read! 🙂

Divorced Catholics who remarry without a decree of nullity knew the consequences and should have to live with them.
Did they?
We have 100’s of thread on how catechesis the last 50 years has been abysmal, and we have a society that says, hey if your marriage doesn’t work out, that’s OK.

AL is a response to our time, not the Church of the 1950’s or before. It is not changing anything other than asking Pastors of souls to accompany people to the fullness of truth that is the Church.
This is a very good thing!!!

It’s always going to be difficult to reconcile two documents when you refuse to read one of them.

I read the part that says there are some situations which are exceptions.

Wrong is not the proper term. Familiaris Consortis “amply presented” the doctrine and teaching on this subject. Amoria Laetitiae presents more of the Church’s teaching, which supplements and reinvigorates FC.

The CDF’s characterization of FC does not know the teaching of AL, so its use of terms like “binding” and “cannot be modified” may seem like a proper reading of FC, but in light of AL, does not properly reflect Church teaching.

I thought it was the resolution of the debate.

Church teaches in FC.
CDF interprets FC.
Church teaches in AL, contradicting CDF but not FC.
