I read an article that talks about Pope Francis and the Amoris Laetitia allowing divorced people to remarry and receive communion? Can someone please explain how this isn’t heresy? I thought divorce was never allowed!

Civil divorce is necessary if one want to seek an annulment. Since the 1986 code of Canon law, divorce does not carry the canonical penalties it once did.

That said, what AL is talking about is helping people who are in irregular situations to rectify them, and doing so in pastoral ways.

Fear not!

Is this a banned topic I want to make sure I’m not violating any rules? Also it’s super tricky to read so I’m hoping someone smarter can explain.

Thank you I was legit confused and worried cause someone mentioned the issue and I had no knowledge of it. I tried to read it but ended up more confused.

Why are you confused?
AL is all about a pastoral approach to some very difficult issues, that sadly were not always dealt with in a loving, pastoral way.

It has not changed any doctrine, if that is what you are worried about.

Don’t believe everything you read. Study the words that Francis actually used, not someone else’s characterization of them. And you will see that Francis’ view on allowing divorced people to remarry is actually consistent with that of Benedict, and his predecessors.

As to receiving communion, he is consistent with his predecessors as well. (Believe me, I wish it wasn’t so!) Francis left just a glimmer of hope for divorced Catholics in his admonition, AMORIS LÆTITIA ¶ 303, that “individual conscience needs to be better incorporated into the Church’s praxis in certain situations which do not objectively embody our understanding of marriage. Naturally, every effort should be made to encourage the development of an enlightened conscience, formed and guided by the responsible and serious discernment of one’s pastor, and to encourage an ever greater trust in God’s grace. Yet conscience can do more than recognize that a given situation does not correspond objectively to the overall demands of the Gospel. It can also recognize with sincerity and honesty what for now is the most generous response which can be given to God, and come to see with a certain moral security that it is what God himself is asking amid the concrete complexity of one’s limits, while yet not fully the objective ideal. In any event, let us recall that this discernment is dynamic; it must remain ever open to new stages of growth and to new decisions which can enable the ideal to be more fully realized.”

I know that for an annulment to happen divorce is included but doesn’t this feature divorces that occur that aren’t annulled?

Divorce is a civil proceeding. The Church has nothing to do with the actual obtaining of a divorce.

A divorce must be secured by civil authorities before the Church can begin the annulment process.

Right but if someone gets a civil divorce and doesn’t get an annulment and remarries doesn’t that mean no Eucharist whereas this would say yes?

No, AL does not say that.

It is calling for a pastoral approach to helping people deal with the situation. There are many variables that need to be considered, and a “cookie cutter” approach is not the best way to do things.

You are welcome.
This topic is near to my heart, as I was on the receiving end of some very unpastoral treatment regarding my marriage situation.
Thanks be to God it has all been rectified, and now with more guidance from AL, hopefully others will not have to live the torment that I did

Watch ETWN’s the World Over Live. Google the topic. You’ll find that AL is heresy and has been condemned as such.
I’m sorry, but you are mistaken. AL certainly does not promote heresy

No. All watching The World Over will do is allow you to see a man with an agenda. Mr. Arroyo does the church no good service with his hit pieces on Pope Francis. His stories are nowhere near balanced and highly editorialized with his personal bias. I am not going to get into a debate about this as it is my opinion only and nobody else is required to believe it, but beware, Arroyo gives indisputable facts, but not all the facts.

This is the main heresy: that God does not offer enough Grace for men to avoid sin, or that avoiding adverse physical consequences makes sinful behaviors “necessary”.

I won’t say anything about the document itself but will say that I know of no instance where Cardinal Burke has said Amoris “is heresy.” If he was so sure of this, besides, he wouldn’t have bothered to take part in the submission of the “dubia.”
