He was hired to install an image analyzer. When he was asked to show what it does, he was slipped a photo of the Shroud of Turin. He wasn’t practicing his faith then. That became a turning point in his life.

He became an advisor to a group of scientists studying the shroud. Intrigued by their report’s findings, “Schumacher felt a growing desire to learn more about that crucified man he first met on his VP-8. He eventually came to a firm belief that the Shroud of Turin does reveal the face of Jesus and, in the process, his faith was so strengthened that he was ordained a Catholic deacon in 2009.”

“The Vatican has neither confirmed nor denied the authenticity of the Shroud.”
I hadn’t realised that ,🤔 I thought the Vatican would have confirmed the authenticity.

I hadn’t realised that ,I thought the Vatican would have confirmed the authenticity.
The Shroud’s authenticity was proven inadvertently by its first scientific test in 1898 which was just a simple photographic negative. In 1902 Vignon published that proof in THE SHROUD OF CHRIST. However, this shocking proof was immediately opposed by prominent Catholic theologians Develier and Thurston. That may be why the Church did not sign of on the Shroud’s authenticity then.
Also, some opponents claimed that Pia had “doctored” his 1898 negative, and it wasn’t until Enrie repeated this test in 1931 that Pia was vindicated.
Sometimes ecclesiastical authorities are a little slow to accept the proofs of science, and that seems to be the case here. The 1978 STRUP investigation found nothing wrong with the Shroud as Jesus burial linen, but could not scientifically confirm the identity of the person it represented.
Perhaps the Vatican was waiting for a final confirmation in the form of carbon fouteen dating. In my opinion, this was both unnecessary and was putting God to the test. God responded by confounding us with an unexpected result.
Now the 1988 C-14 evidence has been invalidated as proving a date.* Instead, it proves a miracle: the vanishing of Jesus’ corpse from the inside of a sealed tomb.** The Vatican, once again, is dragging its feet on signing off on these proofs.
