I am inclined to agree with the first reply. He has given so many version of this event and changed his story so many times now, that it does just seem like he is trying to turn the attention back to himself again and perhaps is also doing it for money, agreeing to give ‘new’ information to those who interview him, for money.
In the past he has blamed Turks and Bulgarians, the KGB, cardinal Agostino Casaroli [as can be seen the video you have linked], and after that the Iranian government. I think at one stage near the beginning he also said he was working alone.
He also mentioned in the past that he could not get a clear shot at the pope because the little girl was in the way [when he found out he had survived] and that’s why he couldn’t kill him. Later he said did not not intend to kill him, only to wound him, making it seem as if he was successful in accomplishing what he had set out to do.
It’s difficult to believe anything he says to be honest. One of those versions might be true or all of them could be false. I doubt he has revealed the real source, otherwise his like would probably be at risk. He might reveal it later on in life.
Either way, I think the accusation of the Vatican’s cardinal is by the far the least probably of these.
