A lot of discussion happens in this forum about abortion, I thought I’d place this here so those of the pro-choice [to kill unborn children] mindset might see and think of those who aren’t as fertile!
One night bought a lot of miscarriages and gynae emergencies to the gynae wards at the hospital I work at was full up, so much so that gynae patients were sent to other wards. The ward I worked on was oftentimes considered a “dumping ground for outlyers” meaning patients who should have been in another speciality ward couldn’t get a bed there were put on ours. The ward I work on was a speciality that didn’t often get a lot of admissions or acutes.
That night we had four women miscarrying and one woman due for an elective termination of pregnancy, or TOP - in NZL abortions are performed in hospitals and we only have clinics operated by our health ministry in our two largest cities - and theyre still on the same site as our hospitals.
Anyway, one of the women who had miscarried was waiting on a DC to remove the retained placental products - she’d already passed her foetus. THis was her 7th MC in 2 years, (her 14th in 6 years) she’d had the two rounds of IVF the govt. health ministry would pay for, and she and her husband had re-moraged their house and business to fund three more cycles, this MC pregnancy was the result of her 5 cycle. Obviously, she was devastated.
In NZL last year there was only about 50 adoptions compared to 18,500 abortions in a country with a population of 4 million. So granted, this had not been a successful venture for her.
She ended up in the bed next to the woman due for the abortion. They got to talking, as two young women in hospital got to doing. The subject as to why they were in here came up… obviously the TOP lady wasn’t going to be fourthright… but after hearing the story of the lady and her desire to have her own children she confessed. The MC lady didn’t judge her, didn’t curse her, and simply replied “Well, I guess you gotta do what you feel is right for you”.
There was this uncomfortable silence in the room. (It was a 6 bed room, and I was in there the whole conversation as one patient was having a blood transfusion and I had to sit with them for half an hour to watch for reactions).
Well, guess who decided not to go through with their TOP? I found myself sending a referal to the social workers to come up and see these women and start the adoption process!
Later, the s/w and I were talkign with teh woman who was meaning to TOP, the sw wanted to make sure the woman didn’t feel guilty and that was her reason for not TOPing, the TOP lady replied:
“This is my 3rd TOP, its so easy for me to get pregnant, yet [MC lady’s name] can’t… all she wants is a child, and here I am throwing away mine! Why not make someone else happy, give this child a chance, and feel like I"ve done somethign to right my bad karma?”
The s/w was the one assigned to our ward, and wasn’t the TOP service’s s/w, the s/w from our ward said to me later - makes you wonder how many women would TOP if they spent a few minutes with MC lady.
I post this story now because a day ago I saw in the paper the announcement of the birth of the baby who would have otherwise been murdered for convienance.
