I was channel hopping yesterday morning and stopped to listen to a few minutes of the preaching at the Toronto Airport Fellowship (home of the “Toronto Blessing”).
The woman preaching there (the boss’s wife I think) was saying that she had been in prayer and that God through the Holy Spirit had given her an astounding revelation. She later prayed that the spirit of “religion” be bound so that the new revelation could be received.
Now, I know that this sort of thing is dangerous and these “new revelations” can lead churches into all sorts of erroneous directions.
What was the “new revelation” this time?
Apparently there is one body of Christ (church). There is not one body on Earth and a second body in Heaven. There is only one body. Not only that, these two parts of the one body need to work together.
Hmmm, that new revelation sounds quite old to me as it is what the Catholic Church has always taught.
Unfortunately, as charismatics tend to do, she then got caught up in a discussion of binding and loosing rather than working out how these two parts of the one body actually can work together.
I have to say the Catholic view that the two parts work together through prayer etc makes a lot more sense than anything she said.
For a while I was quite excited at this church working out that there is one body of Christ.
It almost reminded me of the time I was in a church (The Modern Jesus Army) and the pastor stopped mid-sermon to talk to the apostle Paul. When he was accused of heresy by people (including myself but I’ve changed my views!) he proceeded to justify talking to those in heaven from the Bible. Wow. That same church had a thing for a while about spiritual fatherhood. Wow again.
