As I recall the parents broke the law when they employed the babysitter. I read that it was illegal for a Jew to employ a Catholic in the Papal States. That illegal act set the scene for what followed.
=gerhardd;7301704]Canon 868 §1 states, "For an infant to be baptized lawfully it is required:
1° that the parents, or at least one of them, or the person who lawfully holds their place, give their consent;
2° that there be a well*founded hope that the child will be brought up in the catholic religion. If such hope is truly lacking, the baptism is, in accordance with the provisions of particular law, to be deferred and the parents advised of the reason for this. "
I have a few questions concerning this law: Did Christ say “you may forbid the children to come to me if you don’t have a wellfounded hope they will be raised catholic”? Did Peter say, “The promise [of baptism for the remission of sin] is to your children if and only if there is a wellfounded hope they will be raised catholic”?
It’s a FAIRs of questions.Does baptism save children or does raising them in the catholic religion save them? If raising children catholic is what ultimately saves them, how does the catholic religion differ from the Anabaptists?
Many times it is a cultural thing. I have been present at many baptisms in my Church. Many times none of us recognize the parents at all and never see them again. They may “promise” to bring the child up Catholic, but the reality is the child will have the same view as the parents. Sadly, it is due mostly to ignorance and poor catechises. There really is no point in being baptized if you have no intention of living out your baptism within the life of the Church. Why would the parents want to have a baptism in the Catholic church just to not end up taking the child to Catholic Church? Surely if they wanted to have the child baptised, they could find other churches to go to that won’t even require attendance from any of them at all.
Well, I can’t help. This is what quite a few people from the Baptist background told me…Define “giving one’s life to Jesus”. I suspect that one who has given one’s life to Jesus would know better than to judge the faith of others.![]()
Define “living one’s religion”. Some would say the fact that I enjoy a beer, or dancing is evidence that I’m not living my religion.
Honestly, I won’t question the faith of others, but I’m not particularly open to “evangelizing” from folks who reject the sacramental, salvific nature of Baptism, or who fail to discern the real presence in the Lord’s Supper.
Well, simply living a Christian life. - Following Jesus and try to do all he commanded us in the Holy Bible.

Luther explains “how” in his Sermon for the 3rd Sunday after Epiphany, “For the baptizer asks whether the child believes, and the answer for the child is: Yes. And he asks whether it desires to be baptized, and the answer for the child is again: Yes, Now nobody is baptized for the child, but it is baptized itself. Therefore it must also believe itself, or the sponsors must speak a falsehood, when for it they say: I believe. Furthermore, the baptizer declares that it is born anew, has forgiveness of sins, is freed from the devil, and as a sign of this he puts on it a white garment, and deals with it in every way as with a new, holy child of God: all of which would necessarily be untrue, if the child had not its own faith. Indeed, it would be better never to baptize a child, than to trifle and juggle with God’s Word and sacrament, as if he were an idol or a fool.”JonNC: “I guess my confusion is over how an infant confesses his/her catholic faith.”
."JonNC: "What I’m saying is that an LCMS pastor, for example, is part of the synod, and is accountable to it
So, a Lutheran pastor begins the practice of rebaptizing, are you saying that the LCMS would only advize him not to? And he could continue to claim he is an LCMS pastor? No, the LCMS is an advisory body only. The LCMS may render an opinion regarding baptism but the pastor is not bound to obey that opinion.
=Esdra;7304604]Hi,
the thing with baptism as a “cultural event” is really interesting.![]()
You know what? I live in a Catholic dominated Country (Austria, Europe) and this happens all the time here. I’ve never heard of a priest deferring baptism 'though.
In my opinion this is also the reason why Baptists, Anabaptists and other denomination with a strong emphasis on “giving ones life to Jesus” say that Catholics ain’t Christians.
I guess they see all the Catholics who are only Catholics on the paper (and I tell you, nearly all Catholics [as well as Lutherans and similar Protestants] are only Lutherans/Catholics etc on the paper!) - and then see that they can’t be Christians because they don’t live their religion.
I can understand them that they see the need to “evangelize” them, really.
I don’t know how the situation is in the US where Catholicism is only a minority religion…
I’ve talked to my mom ones (who is Catholics, like the rest of my family) and she said, she would let the child get baptised because otherwise it can’t partake on “social events” like first communion or confirmation. Or in kindergarten won’t understand what the procession on St. Martin’s Day etc.
In general the chance that a child here in Austria is “properly” raised Catholic is rather low. I mean basic things maybe be taught, like going to Church on Sunday (but the child, like me in former times, don’t even know why it has to go to such a “boring” event) or maybe even that there are saints and that you can honour Mary… - But the child won’t understand - like I also didn’t really understand. Even R.I. is nit obligatory in schools anymore - anyone’s free to visit Ethics instead - and many do so, especially in Junior High.
And even R.I. teacher’s don’t teach “Catholic Doctrine” anymore, but rather different stances of the CC on ethical topics like suicide or abortion. - If they’d do other, nobody of the students/pupils would pay attention because they are simply not interested in such a boring and “from yesterday” institution like the CC.
And what is most brutal for me as a “born again Christian” : even the bible is very seldom taught…
WOW! Communion, Baptism, Ect. are “social events?”… friend yor miles away from a correct understanding…In Christ,
Esdra
At least they are baptized in teh Church that Jesus built, while others who are outside the Church claim to know what they are doing when they really dont. the Holy Church of God carries them and eventually they will repent and come into the Church. if you could view the Catholic Church like we Catholics do, you would be amazed. Disobedience to God is a grave offense, those outside the Church do not realize this.Well, I can’t help. This is what quite a few people from the Baptist background told me…
For me Catholics are the same Christians than the Baptists. (Especially the Charismatic Movement and similar movements arising in the CC in the past 20 years - I luv them).
But I know from many Baptists that claim that Catholics are not Christians because they don’t have a personal relationship to Jesus and didn’t give Him their lives.
By the way: I never said that Baptists (at least not the majority) see ALL Catholics as non-Christians but mainly the Catholics only by name, which are plenty of in the world…
Many so called Catholics here in Europe have no idea about Jesus, never go to Church, don’t even know what is celebrated on Christmas, not to mention Easter etc…
Are they Christians in your opinion? At least they all call themselves Catholics and even write it in the gap where you have to fill in your religion (in official documents): Religion: Roman Catholic.
To be perfectly honest, when talking about THIS type of Catholics, I can well understand Baptists, Pentecostals etc. that they see the need to evangelize those “Catholics”.
Well, simply living a Christian life. - Following Jesus and try to do all he commanded us in the Holy Bible.
This doesn’t only involve going to mass or service on Sundays (and important for Evangelicals: having community after service, in Bible Study groups or in prayer evenings, but also to become a new person in Christ, like Paul writes in Romans, Chapter 8.
Do people live “a Christian life”, according to you? I would so no, most people live by far an absolutely non-Christian life. - This refers to Catholics, as well as some Protestants.
I have been a Baptist now for about a year, and I tell you, among Catholics I’ve never seen people like my Baptist brothers and sisters: They really try to live a Christian life, a holy life, just as it is commanded in the Holy Bible, especially the New Testament.
I have never seen such a love for Christ among Catholics than they have.
I also love my Lord and I am also giving my best to draw always nearer to him and try to live a Christian life.

FACT for the folowing reasons it is IMPOSSIBLE for non-catholics to have a closer relationship with Christ than do Informed and Praticing atholics. WHY?
Because Christ founded ONLY one Church, One Faith and made One New Covenant; and it is ONLY Catholics who are able to particiape in this “New Covenant in MY BLOOD!”
Mt. 25:26-28, Mk. 14: 22-24, Lk. 22:19-21, Paul 1 Cor. 11:23-29 and this From John Six: 52- 56 "The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. ***For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. ***
It’s IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to have a “more personal relationship with God” ; than do we who reveive HIS REAL Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. [LOOK at John6:56![/COLOR]
***I must point out DENIAL of God’s OWN WORDS are Denial of God Himself; so how does one have a “personal relationship” with a God they deny ***
The Catholic Church was in existence for 1,500 + years before John Calvin founded his own man-made-religion.
Acts.20:28 “Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church SINGULAR] of God which he obtained with the blood of his own Son. “
**Mt. 16:19 ** 19 I God singular] will give you [singular[/COLOR]] the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you [singular] bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
Eph. 2:19 So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, [singular] built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; [singular] in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit."
Eph. 4: 4 -8 “There is one body [Only One Church] and one Spirit, Only One set of beliefs] just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, [Only One God] ONLY one faith, [Only One set of doctrine and dogma[/COLOR]] one baptism, By water in the Trinity] one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. "
***The CC is the Orginal Bible church and it i the CC that Gives the Church thee Bible! ***
***Some understanding of Church and bible history ought to be applied in making statements about a Faith, And The ONLY Church founded by God Himself; not simply someone who for a varity of reasons founded there own man-made church,
I commend you fo posting on the Catholic Firum where; God willing you will be exposed to THEE Truth. If in doubt about this post may I ask you to READ: ohn 14;16-17 [nothe the word “forever” and John 17:14-19, taking note that God Himself acts as the warratny of Infallible truths on all matters of Faith and Moral Teaching.
No other church can make this claim.
I suspect: There are MORE Catholic SAINTS and **Catholic Martyrs ***than all other faiths combined.
Which commands? how about that one being in His Church and never leave no matter what?yeah, they are…
BUT what is this good for, if they are only Christians by name?
This was my point actually…
Up to now I have found no single “reborn Christian” that were only one by name. Most of them do love their Lord and have decided that he shall be the master of their life.
And as they really love him, like I also do, they try to do everything to fulfil Christ’s commandments (cf. Jn 14:15).
In Christ,
Esdra
Did I really leave the Church by joining the Baptists? Is there not still one Church united by Christ? There is, I tell you. Do we not all love Christ, no matter whether we know the Bible nearly by heart or hear God’s word during mass… I really don’t want to start a despute with you…Which commands? how about that one being in His Church and never leave no matter what?
Well, I just know a heck lot of Catholics by name only. - And they don’t even try to follow the way of Jesus… Do they love Him then? - consider (again) Jn 14:15.how do you know if someone loves the Lord if you cannot see or know the hearts of man? if they really knew who our Lord is, they would seek the Truth in His Church.
Of course he did. He just did human mistakes, also referred to as sins.would you say that David did not love God because he committed so many attrocities?
Just as a followup to our dialogue here, from the LCMS website:JonNC: “What I’m saying is that an LCMS pastor, for example, is part of the synod, and is accountable to it.”
No, the LCMS is an advisory body only. The LCMS may render an opinion regarding baptism but the pastor is not bound to obey that opinion.
lcms.org/pages/internal.asp?NavID=2220At the same time, Lutherans believe that God has instituted the office of pastor for the preaching of the Gospel and the administration of the Sacraments on behalf of** and with accountability to the church**.
Any religious person who would kidnap a child or arrange a baptism for them without parent permission is a religious terrorist.Kaninchen: “What on earth does ‘sectarian Jew’ mean, by the way?”
gerharddA follower of a sect of Jewish teachers who reject Christ.
Goodness and there I was thinking I was Jewish rather than ‘sectarian Jewish’!
Apart from being rather insulting, is this a common idea amongst your sect?
Kaninchen: “Christian sectarian interpretations of something I see as meaningless in the first place aside, if somebody had done the same thing to one of my children, I might consider an action for minor physical assault but nothing more.”
gerhardd: Then, why would you employ a Catholic babysitter when you know their Canon permits them to baptize dying children without parental consent?
Well, there’s a lot more to the ‘Affair’, as I said, including her motivations and what it was she actually did.
As to whether a babysitter might have done such a thing to one of my daughters, to a Christian the child would have been baptised, to me the child would have merely gotten wet. The only reason for the ‘Affair’ was that the law allowed/encouraged the kidnapping of Jewish children in the Papal States, fortunately I don’t live in such a society.
